Re - bound book with very stout spine and heavy boards which is half leatherette, card portion of cover is significantly worn and softened, page block is tanned, title page has a dedication, first and last few pages are lightly foxed, clear and tight. Not all the plates are signed, but were the work of the top young American engraving artists of the era including: Tanner, Benjamin (1775-1848); Rollinson, William (1762-1842); Doolittle, Amos (1754-1832); Tisdale, Elkanah (1768-1835); Scoles, John (1772?-1853); Anderson, Alexander (1775-1870); etc. Frontis detached and chipped, but most of the other plates are in decent condition. Copies with all of the plates are not often found today. 'First published in thirty numbers, of sixteen pages and an engraving, each. The completed volume bearing the date of the first number, although publication was not completed until 1796 or 1797. Ex library with a small label on the spine and a book plate on the inner cover. Dark brown blind stamped covergilt title on the spine. Head of the spine has some small pieces missing and the tail is nicked. The hinges have some slight splits. The corners are softened and bent. Lower board has a bump on the top edge. With both half-titles, the separately printed errata slip, and the advertisement leaf at end. The errata slip (for both volumes) is present in the first volume; Wise calls for it to be in the second. The engraved frontispieces depict Wordsworth (engraved by Skelton from Pickersgill) and Dora Wordsworth, Mrs Quillinan (Armytage from Gillies).
