ABOUT THIS BOOK: At the mere mention of the name lsquo;Gelignitersquo; Jack Murray any Australian from the Baby Boomer era or older canrsquo;t help but to crack a smile. Murray was best known as the rally driver who in 1954 won the REDEX Round Australia Reliability Trial without the loss of a single point; but Jackrsquo;s sporting interests and achievements were eclectic and far-ranging. In his own words at different times throughout his life he was lsquo;engaged in various sports with various successesrsquo;: cycling; VFL schoolboy football; stock car racing; hill climbing motor races; circuit car racing; car endurance events; Australian and NSW Grand Prix racing; international and Australian rally driving; wrestling; boxing; crocodile kangaroo and buffalo hunting; ocean boat racing and waterskiingmdash;to name most but not all. Oh yesmdash;Jack even raced a bathtub once plug in. Jack Murray died in 1983. Encounters with those who met him knew him and loved him now grow fewer and fewer as the years pass and the Reliability Trials of the 1950s drift into Australian history and folklore. Jackrsquo;s personal and nonpublic life showing the man behind the derring-do has never been fully explored or written about. Here for the first time is Murrayrsquo;s full story as told by his son Phil Murray. Son of the legendary lsquo;Gelignitersquo; Jack Murray Phil has inherited his fatherrsquo;s genes when it comes to adventure seeking personal challenges and embracing all life has to offer. Just as his father did Phil believes life is best lived following some pretty simple instructions: lsquo;Donrsquo;t take yourself too seriouslyrsquo;. Thus Phil is the perfect person to display to the world a man whom many thought they knew but who was much more complicated and talented than his racing exploits would lead us to believe. 1822004850Bear Gap Pa 1822. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter from W.H. Sayre Bear Gap Pa. to Powell Stackhouse Philadelphia. Sayre reports that "my cause was not tried this last court." He hopes that Stackhouse will be able to find "the descriptive part" of Stackhouse's deed. If he can find it and send it to Sayre by the next court in April "this will render us secure." Powell Stackhouse 1785-1863 and his wife Edith Stackhouse 1786-1866 were Quakers and members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. He began as a cabinetmaker in the 1810s; was a china merchant for a few years following his father's profession; and in 1818 became a stove pattern maker. In the 1820s he continued in the iron stove business and in 1831 he received a patent for an improvement in stoves. He became a prominent stove manufacturer employing iron from furnaces throughout Pennsylvania; by the end of the century his grandson Powell Stackhouse b. 1840 was president of Cambria Iron Co. The land in question in Northumberland Co. may have been of interest to Stackhouse because it contained iron ore.
