15250001371LOMBARDY ITALY. Good. 1525. Original Vellum. On offer is an ancient very charming and even beautiful manuscript relic of early civil law and legal procedure bound in vellum being the "Corpus Iuris Civilis of Justinian" the Digesta Digests or Pandects Books 1 through 38 in condensed form. All titular headings from 1.1.0 through 38.17.0 with each followed by an abbreviated explanation of the premise. In some instances may also have portions of subsections such as 1.5.6. The text does not contain the elaborations of Ulpianus Pomponius Florentinus or their like. Justinian the Great "Justice is the constant and perpetual wish to render to everyone his due" was the Roman Emperor of Byzantine Constantinople from 527 to 565. He was the last Roman Emperor to speak Latin as his first language. He tried to revive the greatness of the empire by reconquering the lost western half of the classical Roman Empire achieving only partial success in this although he did retake the city of Rome. But probably his most enduring legacy was the uniform rewriting of Roman law the Corpus Iuris Civilis which is still the basis for much civil law in many modern states and with which this volume is concerned. Dated October 30 1525 handwritten in one humanist hand this version appears to be a synopsis of the first 38 books of the Digesta and may have been used as a primer for a law student or as is more likely in this case given the marginalia a reference by a civil authority such as a lawyer or civil magistrate. On the spine is the word "Castaldus". Castaldus Gastaldo in Italian was also a term for a Lombardy official in charge of some portion of a demesne a gastaldia or castaldia with civil martial and juridical powers. When Lombardy submitted to a codified Roman law the term came to be used as a reference for civil magisterial matters. Another possiblility is this was owned by a Restaurus Castaldus an Italian civil lawyer d. 1564 and known to be the author of published book: "De imperatore in Tractatus universi iuris" or this book may possibly be a redaction or some other volume of the same Castaldus by another hand. This book offers a wonderful research opportunity for the right researcher! Description: CASTALDUS 1525 Italy. Cover of limp vellum 148x 119x 20mm Held by two leather straps through the spine to under the covers. Small section of cover on spine is missing. 124 leaves of linen rag paper 140 x105mm the first and last blank. 122 paginated folios; 1-109 CX-CXXII. Collation; i I 1313 a singleton II16 III15 39 a singleton IV15 51 a singleton V16 VI15 90 a singleton VII16 i. COMPLETE. 243 pages of text. Dated on recto of f.CXXII October 30 1525 verso blank. The pages have 15 lines in brown ink written in an elegant Humanist Bookhand with italic traits a few initials with minor flourishes near the beginning and marginal notations. Folios 73-79 some ink smear from damp stain f.74-75 stuck together in center toward spine. Folios 107-CXXII with spill stain over one half of page. In all instances the text is legible. The book is in unusually good condition for it's nearly five hundred years of life although it naturally shows appropriate signs of age and use and there is some brittleness to the cover. 1555000865Dégagnac France Lot. Very Good. 1555. On offer is a fascinating handwritten medieval French manuscript book earliest date 1555 with entries through 1597 in original blindstamped calf with small Fleur-de-lis. This stunning book has approximately 300 pages of handwritten entries being a register of acts properties transactions loans personal notes and journal entries the majority concerning Marc-Antoine Hébrart a noted merchant in the village of Dégagnac in Lot in south-western France. Most certainly Jewish it is evident that the Hebrart family was one of the largest land-holding families in the area. "In 1504 and 1505 the two "headmen" of the village Antoine Hebrart and Pierre Peysson together accounted for 15 percent of the land of the village" Ref: By Le Roy Emmanuel and Ladurie John Day The Peasants of Languedoc . A pencil annotation indicates that Marc Hébrard was of Jewish origin. A fairly cursory examination of the manuscript lends no additional support to this assertion but it is possible given the history of the Jews of neighboring Languedoc and the fact that some Jews remained in France under Christian-like assumed names after their expulsion in 1306. The generic 'Marc-Antoine' is cited as a Jewish name in Sara Uckelman's "Jewish Given Names Found in "Les Noms Des Israélites en France." 17390002104HOLLAND THE NETHERLANDS GERMANY. Very Good. 1739. Leather Spine. On offer is a superb original historical early 18th Century travel journal of three 3 Dutch men Daniel van Alphen P. van Dorp and the writer of the journal Hendrik van Alphen 1708-1764 who travel from Holland to Germany from April 9th 1739 through late summer. Hendrik is listed on Dutch genealogical sites as a 'koopman' or in English a merchant and given the many references that include numbers the approximately 8 x 10 inch very full 133 hand numbered page book is unlike diaries there is little detail of the daily doings but rather Hendrik described landscape and the community where they were how long the journey from one city to another city took and why in some cases the trip took longer than planned. The influence of Daniel van Alphen whom was probably a registrar during the journey is very clear in the journal. On every location that the authors arrived a specific attention is paid to the religious situation in that city or village. Matters such as the number of churches in the city and the friction between the different groups of the church were described. The landscape of the cities are also described with detail and some background information which makes the journal very enigmatic and interesting to wonder the true intent of their visit if one is driven to whimsy! The trip lasted at least from Vollenhove The Netherlands to Hanau Germany. The author even mentions being in Heinheim a few times but this is now most likely known as Heidenheim. That means that they at least covered a distance of 500 kilometers which was travelled over water or by foot. And if the Heidenheim is meant by Heinheim the trip covered at least 750 kilometers. Other places visited include Groningen Friesland Berlin Leipzig Coburg Frankfurt etc. The pages are bound in a somewhat later half leather binding. ONLINE BIO NOTES: Hij is geboren op 21 april 1708 in Hanau. Hij is overleden op 18 mei 1764 in Amsterdam hij was toen 56 jaar oud. Beroep: Amsterdam koopman. BIO NOTES2: Daniel van Alphen born on 7 November 1713 and died 16 July 1797 was a well known individual in Leiden the Netherlands. In the year that the journal was written his family was established for more than 200 years in Leiden. His grandfather was even the mayor of Leiden. Van Alpen started studying Literature but he made progress and was assigned as a teacher in Law Leeraar in de Rechten. Shortly afterwards he was promoted to registrar someone supporting the lawyer and preparing the court. Daniel van Alphen also made a contribution to the Dutch literature. In 1755 he published the book Recht der Overheden over kerkelijke persoonen en zaken which discussed the authority of the government over religious figures and matters in the community. Between 1770 and 1784 he published three books describing the city Leiden. Overall VG.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF DANIEL VAN ALPHEN P. 17880009117THE POULTRY LONDON ENGLAND UK: CHARLES DILLY. Good. 1788. On offer is an original hardcover handprinted book from 1788 regarding the Natural Science of Mineralogy the scientific study of chemistry crystal structure and physical properties of minerals and mineralized artifacts. The book comes at the end of the Scientific Revolution in the Western World roughly from 1600-1800 and is a translation of a book written by Baron Axel Fredrik Cronstedt the famous Swedish mineralogist and chemist who discovered nickel in 1751 and is regarded as one of the founders of modern mineralogy. The title page reads like many in the 17th and 18th century long and with much information: An ESSAY Towards A SYSTEM OF MINERALOGY By AXEL FREDERIC CRONSTEDT Mine-Master Or Superintendent Of Mines In Sweden. Translated From The Original Swedish With Annotations And An Additional Treatise On The Blow-Pipe. By GUSTAV VON ENGESTROM Counsellor Of The College Of Mines In Sweden. THE SECOND EDITION Greatly Enlarged And Improved By The Addition Of THe Modern Discoveries; And By A New Arrangement of the Articles By JOHN HYACINTHE de MAGELLAN.IN TWO VOLUMES. Printed For Charles Dilly In The Poultry M DCC LXXXVIII. In short this the title explains that the book is of the second edition of a translation by Gustav von Engestrom of a work by the Superintendent of Swedish Mines and Baron Axel Frederic Cronstadt with a new arrangement of the articles by Portuguese Natural Philosopher John Hyacinthe de Magellan. There are 5 lines of Latin text under Magellan's name in the title explaining that he was a fellow of the London Royal Society as well as a member of the academies of science in Brussels Madrid Philadelphia Manchester and Paris. The next page contains a dedication To Count LOUIS de BARBIANO de BELGIOIOSO Knight of the Order of Malta Actual Chamberlain and Privy Counsellor of State to His Imperial and Royal Majesty Lieutenant General of His Armies and Proprietor of a Regiment of Infantry in the Imperial Troops &c. &c. &c.By his Much Obliged and Very Humble Servant J. H. De MAGELLAN. A lengthy preface includes a 30 page essay by the Cronstadt a table of contents a TABLE showing the original Order of the Sections in the First Edition and the Place each of them now occupies in the present Publication and a section entitled Corrections and Additions with directions to expunge change or add words or phrases in the ensuing volume sections like this were extremely common in the time before the Industrial Revolution when type was still set by human hand the books were printed on a mechanical printing press. The book divides the sections into overarching 4 Classes Earths Salts Inflammables Metals with subordinated Orders and sections within each order. Besides for the text there are two engraved pages in between the two volumes. The first plate is of drawings of tools used in a Dry Laboratory setting while the second plate is of tools in the Humid Laboratory. All of the tools related to mineralogical analysis and experimentation. Interestingly the back of the book contains a number of pages of handwritten notes by an unknown author. The content is just notes on the books topics of minerals. They almost look like study notes from a student as they reiterate the main topics of the book. The last page shows some original content: The daily paper of Feby 20 1790 mentions the Death of Mr. Magellan the Editor of these volumes. Another paper of this day says he died at Islington. He was a Portuguese Man. This is then followed by the hebrew word for Sefardi a branch of Judaism originating in Spain and Portugal. Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan was in fact Sefardi Jewish. The book is approximately 1080 pages long. The cover is a full leather binding and red endbands. The front and back cover have a good bit of wear but the spine is in very good shape showing a small embossing over red leather that reads System of Mineralogy Von Engestrom. The pages have held up very well showing little discoloration except for the first few and last few pages. The two pages of engravings themselves also show some discoloration on the outside but not on the actual drawing plate. The printed ink is still doing very good as well. The handwriting in the back is easily legible. The ink is faded that make it slightly difficult to read at points. Overall: VG. Background: Baron Axel Fredrik Cronstedt 23 December 1722 19 August 1765 was a Swedish mineralogist and chemist who discovered Nickel in 1751 as a mining expert with the Bureau of Mines. Cronstedt described it as kupfernickel. This name arises because the ore has a similar appearance to copper kupfer and a mischievous sprite nickel was supposed by miners to be the cause of their failure to extract copper from it. Cronstedt named it nickel in 1754. He was a pupil of Georg Brandt the discoverer of cobalt. Cronstedt is one of the founders of modern mineralogy and is described as the founder by John Griffin in his 1827 A Practical Treatise on the Use of the Blowpipe. He remains to this day to be an outstanding idol for young swedes; Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan 17231790 was a Portuguese natural philosopher. He was also a lineal descendant of the great Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan who discovered in 1520 the passage to the Pacific Ocean through the straits bearing his name. Magellan was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1774 and was a corresponding member of the academies of science in Paris Madrid and St. Petersburg. 1796000897NNNMANCHESTER LANCASHIRE UK AFRICA EGYPT. Poor. 1796. On offer is the original handwritten manuscript "Voyages and Travels of Richard Renshaw" of the British Army's heralded Royal Regiment of Artillery Renshaw of the 4th Battalion. Some parts of this manuscript were later published as 'VOYAGE TO THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE' in 1804. Renshaw retells in detail and with a keen observer's eye the story of his service for Great Britain. He is an educated man who writes insightful and sometimes rollicking accounts of his and the group's adventures. He describes everything he sees through Africa and into Egypt as part of Admiral Nelson's fleet and the ill-fated elderly Scot Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby being part of "war reserved for the British nation to annihilate their Napoleon and the French ambitious designs their fleet was attacked defeated and destroyed in Aboukir " An absolutely incredible first hand account of this robust man's life. Whether dodging buffaloes doing a bit of amateur archaeology grave robbing! in Egypt and he does not hesitate to tell all in this very beaten up and we believe incomplete journal. We also suggest that Richard is writing the diary after the fact as he writes of the near past with near total recall and then seems to catch up to himself in around 1801. Here are snippets from the preface and other short quotes: "Voyages and Travels of Richard Renshaw Preface. As the following voyages and travels are now made public I think it is proper to lay before the reader a short acct of my life previous to my leaving England. I was born in ManChester in the County of Lancaster and chiefly educated there. My parents in the early part of my life were in affluent circumstances but in consequence of misfortunes in trade in he order of Divine providence they were visited with the bitter cup of adversity my mother being _____ of delicate feelings . Her constitution was not and terminated in her death. My Father knowing I had a natural inclination for the army taking frequent opportunities to lay before me the shocking numbers in the papers of those slain in previous engagements . I left my fathers house November 1795. I never had the happiness of seeing him after . Without seriously weighing the circumstance of so important a nature I enlisted in the 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Artillery the consequence of this step was in the following pages will inform the reader. I embarked aboard the Crescent Frigate at Spithead on the 28th of February 1796 & sailed in company with the Sceptre sixty four and some few transports the 1st of March the wind being tolerable fair During my time in Africa we trained a Regiment of Hottentots I was attacked by a buffalo but owing to a small lake I escaped from him .On the 17th of August we disembarked the Island of Rhoda and joined Major General Baird On the 12th of December 1801 we marched on Alexandria . During my stay in Alexandria the plague was raging in an astonishing manner " Renshaw has made numerous deletions and corrections to the narrative manuscript for future publication. NOTE: Curiously there is one handwritten note upside down on a blank page titled "Cure for Love" which informs in a rather shaky aged hand a sad unhappy verse. The covers are detached but present the text block in pieces though the narrative is complete from beginning but there are most likely a page or two missing from the end given the way it stops. There is no loss given the narrative begins in 1796 and continues through 1802 over 150 pp or so. The author wrote on the recto pages and saved the verso for later notes clarifications etc. of which there are many. The letter is signed Moses Starr and Elizabeth Starr and addressed to their Dear Daughter. The first letter is dated November 17th 1797 and the second is dated December 23 1797. In the letters they describe their journey to their new home in West Virginia their home and their farm. They now live in New Frankfurt in Harrison County Simpsons Creek Eight Miles From Clarkburg. The first letter begins Dear Daughter we embrace this opportunity to wright to you informing thee that we are all in great haealth at present thanks bea to God for his tender Merceys to us ward from time to time. They write that they have we have had no letters from thee this two years.and have had no opertunity to send any. We long to see thee and hear from thee if thou art single write whether thou would incline to come upon and live with us we think of comeing Down within two years more; like wise let us know how our Relations are in them parts. The back of the letter is a short sermon like passage stating Dear child strive to ear and Love God who is able to Love the utmost oall that come to him through Jesus Christ the Redeeme of lost Man. The next letter begins with them writing that they have received her last letter which gave us some cause to rejoice of hearing from our relations in general but gave us concern of mind for the loss of Nelly Starr and the disolate state of Uncle Joseph. They then remark on the their life in what is now West Virginia. Thy mother was braught to be of a daughter the Eleventh of last month wich we call Polly. They speak of their journey to Virginia taking two weeks from when they left their home. The farming has been good a well reaping 200 bushals of Sound Corn and 150 bushals of Oats with a trifel of buck wheat. I have 20 acres of wheat and Ry in the ground this fall. The letter ends with the usual pleasantries and again is signed by Moses and Elizabeth Starr. The two letters are in fair shape both having a fair share of rips tears and discoloration. The first letter has some moth damage that affects the readability of a sentence or two. The second letter has its tears along the creases and edges but it does not affect the content at all. Neither does the discoloration on either letter though it is very noticeable it does not block out any words. The ink on both letters has faded the first more than the second but both letters are fairly easy to read throughout. These letters are an interesting little snapshot of a family life in 1790s Virginia representing a change in a brand new America and hope for a new setting in this burgeoning nation. 18020009162BETHEL TOWNSHIP LEBANON COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA. Good. 1802. On offer is an interesting document of early 19th century education an original handwritten note book covering a myriad of subjects related to mathematics. The owner and creator of this book was a man named Henry Snevely also written as Snavely and the book dates from 1802 - 1803. It seems Snevely was born in the United States and lived his whole life in Southeastern Pennsylvania. At the time of the creation of the book Snevely was almost 50 years old an established land owner in Bethel Township Lebanon County. Why he had a book of mathematics is unknown however I have found records of a Henry Snavely who taught at a school in Bethel Township from 1797 onwards. It may be likely that this book is actual not for Henry himself but for the instruction of his students. Either way the book presents a fantastic overview of early 18th century knowledge. The book covers a very large range of topics however Math pertaining to financial matters is dominant throughout. As well there are conversions of Irish and British currency. The primary immigrants to the area at the time of the book were indeed Scotch-Irish so teaching Irish and British currency conversions wouldnt be too far off. Currency exchange in particular is a primary focus owing to the large amount of immigrants to the area. Individual page headings in the book include Exchange many pages Exchange of Arbitrations Barter Profit and Loss Fellowship Fellowship with Time Allegation Media Alternate Partial and Total Square Root Cube Root Arithmetical and Geometric Progression Compound Interest Single and Double Position Reduction Addition Subtraction Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Vulgar Fractions Rule of Three in Fractions and Questions for Exercise. There is a later manuscript memorandum on rear endpaper dated 1829 bearing the names of additional members of the Pennsylvania Snavely clan Molly George and John. The name Martin Rupp also appears in memorandum and our research confirms various Martin Rupps residing in southeastern Pennsylvania during this time. The book is in fair to good condition. The volume is bound in the original stiff paper wraps. The cover is very worn and the spine is torn and partially detached. There is mild age-toning and occasional staining but the internal pages are generally clean. The black ink is still bold and easily legible throughout. The book contains about 85 pages of manuscript entries and the book itself is approximately 90 pages. It measures 12.5 x 8 inches. Biography: Henry Snavely was born on August 2 1755 in Bethel Township Lebanon County Pennsylvania. .Henry Snavely was a Lutheran. At that time he was considered a good scholar and is said to have been a hard student obtaining his knowledge principally by his own exertion. He taught the school from 1797 to 1807.; A report from 1773 shows his farm had 150 acres 5 horses 4 cattle and no servants. 18510002324ASEA ABOARD THE NARRAGANSETT. Good. 1851. On offer is a fascinating though enigmatic and curious 1810 manuscript ship's log of Captain Thomas Clarke's return voyage from Russia and Norway to Bristol Rhode Island on the ship "Narragansett". Dated September through December 1810 in many ways this is a typical 'Age of Sail' ship's log book classically filled with daily data required of all formal logs: weather winds sail settings navigational details and entries related to observations and events on and about the ship in this interesting and unusual east to wet trans-Atlantic voyage in an early 19th Century merchant vessel however it appears the book was started mid trip and begins at sea. Curiously someone after the voyage excised very neatly every other page of the journal leaving 26 otherwise well filled pages out of 44 pages in the remaining portion of the book. 18150008043GREAT BRITAIN. Very Good. 1815. On offer is simply superb manuscript of a Royal Navy officer's exploits in the age of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". From the Napoleonic Wars through the rest of the 19th century Britain ruled the world and her instrument was the Royal Navy. This outstanding manuscript details the service of one officer who sailed to 'the far side of the world' when the Royal Navy ruled the world's seas. The manuscript is 176 pages in length and is 100% complete. All pages are typed so legibility is total. Pages are 8 1/24 by 14 inches. The pages are in excellent condition. They are enclosed in a hard cardboard folder. There are several other papers with the manuscript including one of note that will be elaborated on below. John Fullerton joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in May 1815 at 12 years of age. He began his service on HMS Larne a 20 gun corvette. Four days in he saw his first punishment: ". four dozen lashes the first punishment I had ever seen and I never yet met the person who could look upon the infliction without a shudder" p1. From that rather grim introduction he went on to serve in a series of HM ships and travelled the world. He describes his rite of passage when he first crossed the equator on Oct 11th 1819: ". All those who have not been across the Line now go below and the hatchways are guarded . and one at a time blindfolded brought up taken to the chair through a line of people who . "p. 6. He had plenty of adventures. Once after becoming acquainted with a woman in Rio de Janeiro he met a man as he left her home. After exchanging greetings: ". he politely put a knife into my left side and left it there. I gave him an equal portion of my sword and retreated to the ship hospital ." p11. With his friend Hack Hawthorn a Wild Middy p11 he often got into scrapes including one where he and some friends faced off with a Portuguese military street patrol: ". Our swords out and in less than three minutes had possion of their muskets and bayonets but obliged to decamp on board. . Jack generally got those who went on shore with him into similar scrapes." p.12. In 1821 he was commissioned a Lieutenant. His manuscript is rich in observations of places he travelled to and people he met. He mentions a collision with HMS Revolutionaire which was under command of the son of the great Royal Navy Captain Edward Pellew. p24 His descriptions are rich in detail: "I accompanied some Chilinoes to a fair in the country and races many tents with refreshments and dancing people from all parts of the country flocked and a very animated scene it was fair damsels under charge of their sweethearts or lovers and sprightly dame with her shadow not husband he playing the tender to some other man's wife" p77. He also keeps a constant mention of other ships they meet or travel with which provides a first-rate way of cross-referencing other ship's records. On Sept 9th 1827 Fullerton along with some other officers attended the theatre in Valparaiso Chile. He goes into a dispute with a Chilean sergeant which continued to escalate until he shot and killed the sergeant. After a bloody fight in the lounge area of the theatre he escaped wounded to his ship. In reprisal English officers ashore were rounded up and imprisoned. A week later he surrendered to authorities and a jailed until a Spanish court-martial could be convened. At length he was acquitted. What makes this account so historically interesting is that included with the manuscript is the typed statement of the British Consul John White who acted in his defense. The 13 page document is typed on 8 1/2 inch by 14 inch paper and is in excellent condition. It begins: "John White Esq Consul of His Britannic Majesty counsel for Lieutenant John Fullarton Royal Navy accused of having killed Sergeant Jose Maria Minos present the following to the court in justification of the act committed by the said officer ." p1. The defense makes for fascinating reading. It is accompanied by a 46 page packet containing 8 pages of handwritten notes which were part of the original draft. For a naval historian this is an outstanding description of service in the Royal Navy written by an officer with a keen eye for descriptive detail. Written at a time when the Royal Navy truly ruled the oceans of the world it is a treasure trove for information. Whether ship locations customs in foreign lands or life on board it is an outstanding primary source document. The court-martial defense is an excellent example of litigation argument in the early 19th century. It touches on key aspects of self-defense argument that forms the basis for the common law that governs millions of people today. A legal scholar or historian would follow John White's arguments with interest and pleasure.; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF EARLY 19TH CENTURY REGENCY MID VICTORIAN ERA LTN JOHN FULLERTON JOHN WHITE BRITISH COUNSEL IN VALPARAISO ROYAL NAVY GREAT BRITAIN ROYAL NAVY IN THE NAPOLEONIC WARS COURT-MARTIAL AGE OF SAIL AGE OF NELSON MARINE MARITIME LIFE IN A ROYAL NAVY SHIP NAVAL OFFICERS NAVIES NAVAL DISCIPLINE WARSHIPS CORVETTES NAVAL HISTORY VISITS TO FOREIGN PORTS EARLY 19TH CENTURY LITIGATION CHILE IN 1820S SAILORS - SOCIAL LIFE AND CUSTOMS HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

1822000119England Germany France. Very Good. 1822. On offer is a Georgian era travel journal/diary dated from June 20th 1822 to September 6th 1823. Our traveller while unidentified by the illegible signature the writer is undoubtedly the father or grandfather of famed musician and musical agent Robert Whyte from whose estate this book was apart of; and as the writer makes extensive notes and observations on this his 4th visit to Germany Paris and London in well over 80 pages his identity may yet be revealed or confirmed upon further research. Daily entries get easier as one gets used to the author's scrawl. Illness seems to have dogged our diarist alot on this trip. Besides the illegible name on the front that we can not make out along with the title "Journal Pt 4 My 3rd Journey to Germany in June 1822". Research will no doubt yield many many details from this determined writer. Overall the book 8.25 x 6.5 inches is in very good condition save for some light general signs of ageing to the boards with the pages being very good save for some edges being a little ragged. The spine is nice and tight.
