1920000981RUTLAND VERMONT VT. Good. 1920. On offer is a nice 1920 period diary from a hard working Vermont woman. As is typical with these early diaries the women work along side the men and usually toil longer. In this book we find a cattle ranch near Rutland Vermont with our author spending a great deal of time breeding cows and bulls delivering milk tending calves but also chopping wood and all the household chores too. The only thing they haven't time for is complaint. This diary in particular will provide local historians and collectors of the importance of weather to these families. Severe blizzard weather is recorded on a near daily basis for many stretches of winter yet still they toil. Our writer is a very good diarist noting purchases costs sales weather and local events of all types from train wrecks to sheep killings by wild dogs and as is usual a detailed accounts section in the back of the page per day diary. 19200001379WITCHITA FALLS TEXAS VENTURA CALIFORNIA. Good. 1920. Hardcover. On offer is a simply wonderful original manuscript diary handwritten by a Wichita Falls Texas boy of 11 years of age when the diary begins November 11th 1920. Claud Lee Neal b. October 31 1908 is a rough and tumble boy with the likes and dislikes of what many would consider a 'bad boy' or truant but who is essentially an All-American rural kid that rebels against school because he would rather be out hunting fishing playing Tarzan of the Apes going to movies and otherwise having fun. Historians and collectors of the era will recognize the uniqueness of an 11 year old as expressive as Claud. Over 44 numbered pages through to January 1922 we are informed by Claud who writes assuming a stranger will read his personal history in a matter of fact tone for example: 'I went to school today. Me and Sewell swiping Dorothy Isobel Fern and Lula Graces notes they don't say nothing worth reading. Miss Dean slapped Bob today. I wish she would slap me. She would slap me. She would get it right back harder ' Unfortunately this diary is also a study of the times: corporal punishment prejudice and all for the reading. Here are some snippets: "Nov 19th - went to school and joined the boy scouts." "Nov. 20th - I took grandpa to Burk Burnett to day it is the dirtiest town in Texas." Claud is like any other pre teen in gun swinging Texas he loves to hunt: "Nov. 25th - Today is Thanksgiving. I went hunting and we had a big turkey and lots of other things." An entry on December 6th shows his bad boy roots by saying ".I belong to the black hand gang." But Claud is a very industrious young man who is not scared of working hard loves to earn a a dollar. "December 12th - Went to school today we are going to get out the 23 of this month. I am going to get me a job at the Polo Grounds leading horses 25 cents for 6 minutes." Another entry December 22nd - I went to mineral wells day before yesterday on the way I shot at a wolf we slid off the road into a ditch." The entry on January 25th is one of several that speaks of young Claud getting his "Licks" or "Lickings" for bad behavior or in this instance a bad report card. The entry goes on to say "got our report cards today and I got a licking from Mr. Parks for saying I would raise H _ _ _ I got about 50 licks." Then in mid stream after talking about his beating he changes the subject to the topic of girls "I haven't got a girl anymore but I like Elizabeth & Janette and Mary J. Mary B. and Alta Hobbs. I like Bernadine and Alta better than the rest of them." Back to back sad news on Jan. 27th & 28th "A girl scout dies of Scarlet Fever and the next day a neighbor dies of blood poisoning." Other entrees speak of playing hookey fighting chasing girls working hustling or trading items for money or objects of like value. Then there are the movies in which he sees Tarzan several times. 4" x 7" 46 pages. 19200001798ABOARD THE USS BORIE. Good. 1920. On offer is a sensational privately-kept deck log and scrapbook of the USS BORIE DD-215 compiled by 20 year old sailor George Vernon Porter. It was kept from the time of the ship's commissioning in 1920 launched 1919 all the way through the end of this sailor's tour on the ship in 1921. The BORIE had an incredible history. Starting in 1920 she conducted a round the world cruise punctuated by fighting in the Black Sea during the Russian Civil War.Then she travelled and served in China During WWII she distinguished herself in near hand-to-hand combat with U-405. History records that the combatants were so close a knife thrown by a BORIE crew member killed a German U-boat sailor. Her Commanding Officer earned the Navy Cross for their brave actions which resulted in the eventual sinking of both U-405 and BORIE. The sailor who kept this log was one of the original crew and kept nearly day-by-day notes on the location and employment of the ship. We note a typed letter signed by his father dated April 1918 giving permission for his 17 year old son to enlist in the Navy. He mentions that being a former past Commander of the Spanish War Veterans he would appreciate any consideration. Adding great depth to the breadth of this log are the copious amounts of artwork he drew and sometimes tipped in including period cartoons scenes he saw during their time overseas and more. He additionally kept well over 100 "scraps" ranging from newspaper clippings to postcards to foreign paperwork and more! Some of the documents are very uncommon and include original Russian Civil War documents official passes etc. many from places and times no longer in existence. 19200002222FITZSIMONS MILITARY HOSPITAL DENVER COLORADO CO. Good. 1920. On offer is a very sobering fascinating in the sad way it reveals the fragility of human life even for the heroes who walk among us 1920 manuscript diary handwritten by one such man Laurence M. Grubb. Born in 1897 to Andrew B. and Elizabeth Grubb Elizabeth was Andrew's second wife as his first wife Samantha B. Yocum died in 1892. He married Elizabeth his mother but she died in 1905. Laurence a WWI soldier who fought in Europe where it appears he contracted a lung disease likely from chemical warfare perhaps tuberculosis. Back to the USA by the summer of 1919 Laurence was too sick to go home so was sent to a New Jersey hospital. His condition worsened and then he was sent to Fitzsimons Military Hospital in Denver Colorado. Experimental drugs were used but failed to save him and Laurence died on December 8th 1920. We understand one year to almost the day on December 7th 1921 his father Andrew died. This 3¾ x 5¾ diary with 137 days of entries tells the story of Laurence's time in Denver starting on May 28th when he buys the book. Fortunately for historians he uses 11 pages in the front which summarizes his time in the army. Then from May 28th May 26th also has an entry as that is when the experimental drugs start all the way through to October 11th there are full handwritten entries never skipping a day. How he was able to write on some days is remarkable. High fevers multiple injections a day nausea weakness great weight loss etc can only make one wonder at about his waning fortitude. His mantra seems to be "I've been chasing the cure." Nearing the end he is very very sick and it was almost too difficult to read. Then in another hand on his last day of entries: "October 11 1920. Died December 8 1920 at Denver Colo. Fitzsimons General Hospital." 1920 "May 26th Started new treatment. Received five shots in left arm. Never used in this country before. But has been used successfully for ten years in Germany. We are now known as the "Guinea Pigs" on account of being the first to take the cure." "May 28th Arose after an almost sleepless night. Temp normal. Not feeling very well today. Bought a pipe and tobacco; took one smoke. Read awhile in "The Claim Jumpers" written by S. C. White. Bought this book today price two fifty. Got some paper and envelopes from Red Cross. Sent a roll of film to be developed. Did not sleep during rest home which is from 1 to 3. Had a slight temperature this afternoon. Finished reading "The Claim Jumpers." A cloudless day; warm; slight breeze this afternoon." "June 2nd Day cloudy and cold much wind. Received our first single shot today. Got mine in the left arm in triceps muscle. Needle very fine and was stuck straight into the muscle. Read in "Rough Riders." We had a special supper given by the welfare workers of Denver. Some of the things we had were; asparagus boiled ham strawberry short cake buns and candy. Some supper oh boy! Slight temp. this afternoon. Gained two pounds weigh 112. My friend deceased last night." "June 16th Feeling a little better but a very bad throat. Took shot. Ask Maj. at sick call to send me to the throat clinic. He gave me a slip and I went down to dinner but could not get an exam because there was no lights. Ate well today. Not much intestinal trouble. Stayed in bed most all day. Cloudy windy rainy and dusty. Weigh 109 ½ this week." "July 2nd Arose early this morning. Washed; brushed my teeth. Went back to bed stayed until we received our medicine; answered sick call. Got up till nurse made my bed. Went to bed after and stayed there most all day chasing the cure. Had a bath in bed. Broke my thermometer this evening. Very nice day but real warm. Fans going all day and part of night. Payed one month in advance for "Post" seventy five cents." "July 20th Feeling pretty well all day. Visited some this morning. Chase cure rest of the day. Not so very much temperature. Hot and cloudless most of the day not much air going. Appetite still good. Watched part of "Robinsons Circus" perform for patients at hospital this evening." "August 4th Feeling miserable all day on account of my stomach. Answered sick call. Got weighed weigh 101 ½. Signed application papers for discharge. Got five shots this morning on second course of treatment." "August 15th Feeling well all day. Arose early and washed while washing saw a most phenomenal thing; A star shooting out of the sky in the light of rising sun. This was almost fifteen to six. Answered sick call got shot. Chased cure most all day. Miss Turner started to take me for a ride in wheel chair but rain came up." "October 5th Not feeling so well today throat bothered me a lot. Nose bleed last night. He has had world experience as a teacher traveler and social worker only recently returned to this country after seven years residence at Allahabad India where he taught Biology in the Christian College. 3 Ewing Christian College ECC was established in 1902 as Allahabad Christian College by the American Presbyterian Mission ECC is one of the oldest colleges established in India. However this claim is doubtful because the British East India Company was long gone at the time of the college's founding as the British had taken over the control of India after the first war of Independence in 1857. At the beginning the college was named Vernacular school. Later its governance was shifted to the Presbyterian Church. In 1910 it was called Allahabad Christian College. The campus is located on the northern bank of Jamuna River near Sangam on the southern part of Allahabad City. Spread on a sprawling green campus of 42 acres 170000 m2 the college opened its Agriculture Economics Extension Department on the other side of the river which soon developed into Allahabad Agriculture Institute now a deemed university. The college took giant strides in the field of higher education with Dr. Dudgeon opening a first laboratory course in botany laying a very strong base for research in the college. In 1903 many undergraduate offerings were initiated. However in 1922 on the account of a new university act the school lost its college status. In 1935 it started offering classes in a coeducational setup. In 1950 after the permission of Allahabad University classes for degree students began and once again it acquired college status. More recently in 1995 it achieved its autonomous status as institution in India which could offer its own examinations under the affiliation with Allahabad University.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: JAMUNA RIVER SANGAM ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY ALLAHABAD CHRISTIAN COLLEGE EWING CHRISTIAN COLLEGE SOCIAL STUDIES RACE RELATIONS CASTE SYSTEM DR. They range in size from 4 inches by 2 1/2 inches to 6 1/2 by 4 1/4. Three books have 72 pages each one has 120 and a fifth has 96. Two part books have 44 and 56. Four are 100% complete while the remaining three are about 40% complete. Some entries are dated while others are not. All entries are in pencil and the handwriting is legible. Several are in fair condition 1 is missing a front cover and 2 are in quite good condition. The books are ordered with numbers written on the covers. Also included with the notebooks are a number of postcards with dates ranging from 1915 to 1957. Mildred Lemert was born in Cedar Vale KS in 1907. She graduated from high school in 1925 and entered Kansas State University graduating with a degree in Education in 1929. She taught her entire career in Cedar Vale and Clay Centre Kansas. Mildred Lemert passed away in 2001 at the age of 94. She never married. The notebooks describe a road trip her family took in 1923 when she was just 16. She and her family took a road trip to visit and stay with other family members in other parts of Kansas and Missouri. They contain descriptions of activities interactions with extended family and observations of life around her. Some entries are dated month/day. In the first book she describes a trip they took beginning in July. She describes rough roads and the toll they took on the tires: ". We had a flat tire just a short distance from F.S. Fort Scott KS . We had two more flat tires after we left F.S." "We left Sedalia at 7:50 AM and went through Smithton and California and several other small towns and got to Jefferson City for lunch. We went through the State House at J.C. A Negro took us to the very top of the dome" July 20. I saw roads made of rails as they used to be many years ago. Some of the natives said that the State road we travelled was made in the Civil War. In Book Two continues that trip visiting with family. She describes trying to learn to ride a bicycle. She visits the Americana Lace Factory presumably with her cousins. Book Three is a continuation of her holiday trip with her family. She notes that for her birthday: ". Mamma bought Aunt Elma's camera for my birthday present. . I can take some pictures now." Aug 10. Her birthday in fact was several days later on Aug 15th. The postcards include one to her brother Merl in 1915 and several from a friend who moved to Germany in the 1950's. Included is a valentine card she received as a young girl that she kept for many many years and a Butterfly Souvenir Card from Yellowstone Park that contains a fully working wind-up model butterfly. There are also two faded photographs of a team of horses. These notebooks provide a wonderful snap-shot into the life of a young woman growing up in the American mid-west. They capture a summer spent with immediate and extended family members at a time just before the crisis of the Great Depression overwhelmed so much of rural America. A historian would find this of great interest as she very carefully notes towns and villages they saw or visited and describes incidents that relate to those areas such a terrible road or Civil War construction.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF UNITED STATES AMERICAN MIDWEST KANSAS 20TH CENTURY 1920S ROARING TWENTIES JAZZ AGE CEDAR VALE CLAY CENTER CLAY COUNTY CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY MISSOURI ROAD TRIP STATE ROADS TRAVEL CAR TRIPS AMERICANA LACE FACTORY 1920S RECREATION 1920S AUTOMOBILES MECHANICAL BUTTERFLY SOUVENIR CARD POSTCARDS RURAL AMERICA AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

1921000806HOLLY SYRACUSE NEW YORK. Good. 1921. On offer are three handwritten manuscript diaries written by Miriam Hammond a young woman we estimate 16 or 17 she graduates Normal B School in 1923 who lived in Holly New York. Miriam is attending school in Syracuse. These diaries detail the years 1921 1923 and 1924. The 1921 diary is written in a 1916 diary. Miriam is a gal with a lot of personality and she is a fine representative of the 'Flapper' era Miriam seems to focus a great deal on men and dating. In fact it takes Miriam only 3 entries in the first book for her to meet a new fellow admit she likes him and then breaks curfew to keep the date going. She notes giving a ring back to a particular fellow and the many many brothers of her many many girlfriends are all potential dates. These diaries are a whirlwind of activity. Here are some snippets: 1921 "Went to Syracuse on 3 trolley. Arrived at 5:45. Nina met me. Had supper at the "Y". Went to the Eckel with Chet Charlotte Don Nina and I. Had a good time. W. Curtis did not come til 11 p.m." "Went to church in a.m. Went to hear sermon on "Evils of Modern Dancing." Went up to Cole's Had popcorn etc. Met Rodney Cook." "St. Patrick's Day. Had clams clam bouillon lobsters baked chicken and grapefruit. Wonderful time. Back to city and home on last car." "Got up at 7:00. Ready to go to N. Rose. Started at 8:45 arrived there at 12:20. Passed thru Rock iron deposit. W. Webster Union Hill Fruitland Ontario Center Williamson Sodus Wallington Alton. N. Rose. Had a wonderful wedding. Star played wedding march. Nina sang "Oh Promise Me." Decorated car with tin cans etc. Liked Tom very much." "Howard Davis Jean Howard Hazel Ferris and I went to Sea Breeze to the M. I. picnic. Saw circus parade in a.m. Ate lunch at Durand-Eastman. Saw races games took ride down toward Sodus Pt. Rode on Dogin Dip Dip the Dips Jack Rabbit Whip and ate and ate and ate. Danced. Had a wonderful time." Another interesting note - Miriam always mentions times - going to bed appointments etc. and she usually reefers to the time by 'bells' - went to bed at 11 bell. Perhaps her father was in the navy A more than casual reading will no doubt provide further background and for local historians and collectors who will find a treasure trove of local events and genealogical information as this hugely busy young ladies names all her visits and contacts in school and at home. Leavenworth prepared officers to staff and command large units. The Army War College re-emerged in 1919 as the General Staff College in Washington D.C. This institution was to prepare officers for duty with the General Staff of the Army. At the core of this program was the single problem of preparing the army for war. In 1919 this meant mobilization and war plans. At Ft. Leavenworth officers of appropriate rank attended the School of the Line. This course devoted one year to the study of brigade and division operations. Selected officers then went on to the General Staff School also of one-year duration. In the second year students focused on corps and armies. Beginning in 1922 the General Staff School added the study of army groups to its program of instruction. The scope of these studies was impressive. In 1922 a course in strategy was included but by far the bulk of program was devoted to the operations of large units."; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: GENERAL STAFF SCHOOL LT.
