Previous owners name on inside front cover. Light wear. Clean unmarked text. A nice copy of this scarce title. There’s a distinct lack of glamour to this first Maigret mystery. 30523Paris Presses de la Cité novembre 1964. 1 vol. 115 x 170 mm de 185 p. 2 et 1 f. Broché couverture illustrée. . Édition originale. Un des 60 premiers exemplaires n° 29. . 1943905Q31London: George Routledge and Sons 1943 . First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A very scarce first English edition of this work of crime fiction written by Georges Simenon with two intriguing mystery novels bound into one. The first English edition of this novel originally published in French. Written by Belgian author George Simenon who was best known for his creation of the fictional detective Jules Maigret. 'Escape in Vain' is comprised of two of Simenon's works of detective fiction; 'The Lodger' and 'One Way Out'. 'The Lodger' tells the story of a daring crime committed in Belgium on the Brussels-Paris night train showing a young man convicted of a terrible murder.'One Way Out' is set partly in a small provincial town in France partly in a bustling metropolis. Simenon tells the story of young people caught up in a very dangerous situation demonstrating human emotion and the perils of adolescence. Translated by Stuart Gilbert. Bound in the publisher's cloth with the original dust wrapper. Externally lovely with a little bumping to the extremities. Bookseller label and pencil inscription to the front endpaper. One or two spots to endpapers. Dust wrapper is smart with light edge wear and the odd closed tear. Wraps are lightly soiled. Price has been removed using a hole punch to the front flyleaf. Internally firmly bound with bright clean pages. Ink inscription to half title. Near Fine George Routledge and Sons hardcover
1942355490725714London: Routledge 1942. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Gilbert Stuart translated by: Affairs of Destiny London: Routledge 1942. First UK Edition in dustwrapper priced 8s. net to the inside flap. Publisher's turquoise-green boards with black lettering to the spine. Boards exceptionally bright and clean apart from a strip of fading at the spine tips. No previous owner inscriptions. There is a former owner's name and contemporary date to the front paste-down. Very clean interior. No foxing. Overall a near fine copy. The very good dustwrapper is faded to the spine with a touch of wear at the spine tips and with totally unnecessary strips of brown paper-based tape to the verso along the top and bottom edges. "Affairs of Destiny" is one of the scarcest wartime Simenon first editions the dustwrapper of which was made from very poor quality paper hence why it never turns up in really fine condition. A fragile and scarce war-time production. Uncommon. Contains two novels: Newhaven - Dieppe and The Woman of the Grey House. Further photographs available upon request. Routledge hardcover
