Le commissaire Maigret apparaît pour la première fois dans quatre romans populaires que l'auteur signe sous les pseudonymes de Georges Sim ou Christian Brulls. Si ces romans ne figurent pas dans le cycle officiel des « Maigret » c'est parce que Simenon a établi - notamment en 1975 une époque où il occultait farouchement toute oeuvre antérieure à 1931 - une distinction entre son oeuvre illégitime les ouvrages publiés sous des pseudonymes et son oeuvre reconnue les ouvrages publiés sous son patronyme. Le « cycle officiel » comprend 75 romans 4 recueils de nouvelles et 28 nouvelles en revues ; 50 de ces romans paraissent aux Presses de la Cité dont les maquettes connaîtront quatre présentations différentes. A partir de Maigret voyage publié en décembre 1957 la présentation s'uniformise avec un fond de couleur uniforme ou apparaît un profil de l'auteur en ombre chinoise avec chapeau et pipe depuis laquelle prolongée sur le premier plat s'échappent des ronds de fumée contenant le nom de l'auteur et le titre : tous les titres de cette série seront en édition originale numérotée et tirée sur beau papier où tirage de luxe et tirage ordinaire portent le même achevé d'imprimer. A library stamp to the last page of text and glue reside from the removal of library labels to the rear free end-paper and the rear paste-down otherwise a VG copy in nice clean condition. The D/W has a large internally repaired closed tear across the front cover. A quarter of the spine is missing at the base there is a slither of loss to the head and there is a chip at the bottom of the front cover not affecting any lettering. The effect of such loss to the spine and front cover has been cleverly disguised with photocopies placed underneath. Looks surprisingly good considering. Price present for what it's worth. Scans invited. An uncommon book in D/W. Despite its faults this copy shows reasonably well and is priced accordingly. Routledge hardcover

Neat contemporary name and date on the front paste-down outlines of some old pencil prices rubbed out on the FFEP and slight flattening to both the tip and tail of the spine otherwise a solid VG copy with bright and clean boards. The D/W priced 8s net to the inside flap as called for has benefitted from some highly skilled archival repair and refurbishment by one of the UK's leading paper conservators to a couple of minor chips and short tears and now shows as a most attractive example. In our experience "In Two Latitudes" is one of the scarcest wartime Simenon first editions and seldom found in attractive shelvable condition as this copy is. Included is a photograph of the D/W pre and post restoration. A fragile and scarce war-time production. This copy has lasted the test of time pretty well. Uncommon. In the VERY RARE D/W priced 8/- net to the inside flap as called for. The D/W is bright but creased with a short closed tear to the foot of the front panel and head of front flap and tape repair to verso. First edition in English first impression very scarce in D/W. The volume comprises two stories La Danseuse du Gai-Moulin and Un Crime en Hollande both of which were first published in French in 1931. In my experience the scarcest among the first six Routledge volumes. Rare. Scans invited. A much nicer copy than normally seen. Laid in are: a author's postcard sized card signed inscribed and dated 1977 on his Lausanne Switzerland letterhead; and b a 1965 Press photograph of the author on a Winter Sports Holiday at Crans Sur Sierre dated 4-1-65".
