Un des 50 exemplaires sur vélin pur fil non annoncés numéroté au composteur n° 44. . Ce titre fait partie des 22 premiers romans parus chez Arthème Fayard dans la première collection à lui être dédiée et qui voit naître le commissaire Maigret. La série est inauguré le 20 février 1931 par la publication de ce Monsieur Gallet décédé et du Pendu de Saint-Pholien à l'occasion du fameux Bal anthropométrique de la Boule Blanche auquel Simenon convie le Tout-Paris. La série est ensuite publiée à raison d'un ouvrage par mois et s'achève en octobre 1932 après 22 titres dont 17 « Maigret » 2 romans Le Relais d'Alsace et Le passager du Polarlys et trois recueils de nouvelles Les 13 coupables Les 13 énigmes et Les 13 mystères. Le roman est rédigé à bord de l'Ostrogoth près de Morsang-sur-Seine durant l'été 1930. Le manuscrit portait comme titre original et non retenu La chasse à l'ombre. Il a été détruit par l'auteur. L'édition originale paraît en juillet 1931 et son grand papier paraît un an plus tard : il n'était pas d'usage à l'époque de prévoir un tirage de tête sur grand papier pour les romans policiers. Pris de remords Fayard finit néanmoins par procéder à la faveur d'une réimpression à un tirage de 50 exemplaires sur vélin pur fil Lafuma. Aussi les exemplaires sur grand papier des 16 premiers titres publiés par Fayard 15 enquêtes du commissaire Maigret et Le Relais d'Alsace ne font-ils pas partie des éditions originales de ces romans. Ce n'est qu'à partir du « Maigret » Le port des brumes publié en mai 1932 que Fayard fait tirer des exemplaires sur grand papier des éditions originales. Paris, A. Fayard, (avril) 1933. 1 vol.
