ABOUT THIS BOOK: In an apartment in Faubourg Saint-Honore that has seen better days Dominique the daughter of a general is busy mending her dress. It is hot. She sits in her slip as she sews and listens to the noises of the city listens to the scratchy tango the couple in the other room her boarders play on the gramophone while they make love. Sometimes Dominique cannot resist looking through the keyhole though it hurts her and makes her giddy. In three months she will be forty. All the shutters across the street are wide open. Dominique watches the Rouets. She follows their gestures the movements of their lips. It is a long story without words and she knows the smallest episodes of it. Then one day she sees Monsieur Rouet in his bed gasp his last while in the next room Antoinette his wife stands holding the medicine her hand on the doorknob. A near fine copy the binding square and firm with just a touch of rubbing to the spine tips and a small mark to the upper board. The contents with just a little spotting to the closed text block edge are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed price-clipped dustwrapper which has couple of tiny closed tears at the spine folds to and a couple of ink marks to the rear panel. First published in Paris in 1945 the novel later formed the basis for the 1963 French film noir 'L'Aîné des Ferchaux' directed by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. Hubin. A lovely near fine copy offsetting to the end-papers with gold lettering on the spine indicating that this is the likely first issue of the first edition. In the VERY RARE D/W priced 8/- net to the inside flap as called for. The D/W is bright but creased with a short closed tear to the foot of the front panel and head of front flap and tape repair to verso. First edition in English first impression very scarce in D/W. The volume comprises two stories La Danseuse du Gai-Moulin and Un Crime en Hollande both of which were first published in French in 1931. In my experience the scarcest among the first six Routledge volumes. Rare. Scans invited. A much nicer copy than normally seen. Laid in are: a author's postcard sized card signed inscribed and dated 1977 on his Lausanne Switzerland letterhead; and b a 1965 Press photograph of the author on a Winter Sports Holiday at Crans Sur Sierre dated 4-1-65".
