A hardcover book bound in 3/4 navy blue leather with blue cloth boards gilt edges and marbled endpapers. The original binding was in green cloth with gilt decorations; the cloth from the front and back covers and spine are retained on the rear endpapers. Edges of spine and corners of boards are rubbed and there are a couple of dents on the edges not marring the overall shininess. Front edge of spine just starting to crack although the board remains securely attached at this point. Corners of endpapers lightly tanned mirroring the leather. Otherwise clean and tight. Very good condition on the whole. An early printing of Gaskell's novel in an attractive leather binding by Bayntun of Bath England. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. Macmillan unknown
