The large paper edition.'Cranford' is a popular novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell which was originally published in instalments in Charles Dickens' 'Household Words'. It isn't a plot-driven bookmainly relying on satirical sketches of small town customs in Victorian England.Illustrated with a frontispiece and many in-text engravings throughout. Gaskell was one of the most popular female writers of her time also writing 'Mary Barton' 'North and South' and 'Wives and Daughters'. She was good friends with Charlotte Bronte writing a biography about her after her death.Illustrated by Hugh Thomson an Irish illustrator who illustrated editions of books by Oliver Goldsmith Charles Dickens and Jane Austen.Collated complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Only a few minor marks to the boards and spine. Spine label is lifting a little and is lightly rubbed. Spine is faded. Slight marks to the endpapers with hinges starting. Internally firmly bound with generally bright pages with the odd spot and light mark heavier to the front and rear. A hardcover book bound in 3/4 navy blue leather with blue cloth boards gilt edges and marbled endpapers. The original binding was in green cloth with gilt decorations; the cloth from the front and back covers and spine are retained on the rear endpapers. Edges of spine and corners of boards are rubbed and there are a couple of dents on the edges not marring the overall shininess. Front edge of spine just starting to crack although the board remains securely attached at this point. Corners of endpapers lightly tanned mirroring the leather. Otherwise clean and tight. Very good condition on the whole. An early printing of Gaskell's novel in an attractive leather binding by Bayntun of Bath England. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. Macmillan unknown

The very scarce first Tauchnitz edition published in the same year as the first U.K. edition in book form.Complete in three volumes.'Wives and Daughters' follows the only daughter of a widowed doctor Molly Gibson as she grows up in a provincial English town in the 1830s.This novel was originally serialised in the 'Cornhill Magazine' from August 1864 to January 1866. Gaskell died before finishing it so the final section was written by Frederick Greenwood.Bound without half-titles. This edition was published by Bernhard Tauchnitz. Tauchnitz started his 'Collection of British Authors' in 1842 and it continued for almost exactly 100 years. By breaking with the European practise of ignoring British copyright law Tauchnitz was a driving force behind international agreements on international copyright protection. The goodwill he gained from British authors enabled him to be the principal continental publisher of English language works. He was often sent early proofs and so was able to first publish at the same time or very soon after the British publisher. In a full calf binding with gilt decoration. Externally smart. A little light rubbing to the boards and spines. A few light marks to the boards mostly to Volume III. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. Half-titles have been removed.
