As with many American stories in this moralizing mode Peter escapes the most gruesome final torments suffered by the classic Hoffmann bad examples and learns his lesson: "For when a fault is repented of and mended it ought not to be spoken of any more; and whoever teazes another about it after that is doing wrong themselves".
