Directed by Frankenheimer based on the 1959 novel "A Matter of Conviction" by Evan Hunter who also wrote as Ed McBain written for the screen by Edward Anhalt and J.P. Miller and starring Burt Lancaster Dina Merrill Shelley Winters Telly Savalas. <br/><br/>One of the first "thinking man's pictures" of the 1960s addressing the topic of juvenile delinquency head-on with Lancaster as a lawyer initially bent on prosecuting a group of young thugs then coming around to them as he studies the details of the case. The first of four films that Lancaster would make with director Frankenheimer. <br/><br/>Light blue titled wrappers with only the title on the front wrapper and a holograph ink notation at the top edge of same reading "Lanchester" sic which is possibly contemporary to the script's use and possibly later. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Shelley. The binding is like the poet deeply romantic. The six paneled spine is laden with gilt hearts and sinuous gilt borders punctuated by chaste pointielles. Both upper and lower covers have dual linear borders and gilt hearts the design beautifully mirrored on the turn-ins. All edges gilt. Aside from some light minor wear primarily confined to the lower cover this is an exceptionally handsome binding from the Art Nouveau period of design. A perfect marriage of poetry and the bookbinder's art. books

Wikipedia: "Thomas Wentworth Higginson 1823 - 1911 was an American Unitarian minister author abolitionist and soldier. He was active in the American Abolitionism movement during the 1840s and 1850s identifying himself with disunion and militant abolitionism. He was a member of the Secret Six who supported John Brown. During the Civil War he served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers the first federally authorized black regiment from 1862-1864. Following the war Higginson devoted much of the rest of his life to fighting for the rights of freed slaves women and other disfranchised peoples." Howeverm he is probably best remembered as the editor who worked American poet Emily Dickinson. This work includes a 15pp preface by Mary Sheeley and her Journal of a Six Weeks Tour Letters Descriptive of a Sail Round the Lake of Geneva and of the Glaciers of Chamouni. Also in volume two are a number of letters from Percy Shelley to Mary Shelley. The Percy Shelley material includes an essay on poetry philosophical speculations and the like. Dark leather is prone to fading and this copy has had some professional color restoration and the head of the spine is chipped. First 32mo edition with the suppressed dedication appended at end of text. Original drab boards paper label on front cover uncut. A little chipping at spine light rubbing else tight clean copy in the rare original boards binding with a nice full label. The first edition was published in 1813 in octavo and pirated by Clark in 1821 in duodecimo. Clark was sent to jail for his trouble and the following year Richard Carlile reprinted the book again in octavo and had on hand for sale 180 copies of the 1813 edition. Brooks and Watson produced octavo editions in 1829 and 1841 respectively and in 1832 Carlile issued a duodecimo edition but this near miniature edition of 1826 was the smallest trigesimo-secundo of the early editions and rather scarce; Thomas Wise had all of the above mentioned editions including Shelley's own heavily revised copy of the 1813 edition. This volume constitutes the first collected edition of Keats and only the second collected works of Coleridge & Shelley although only volume 1 issued in 5 parts of the 1826 edition of Shelley's works was issued and the edition was not completed and contains works published here for the first time from all three poets. Each poets work is preceded by a short life of the author. The memoir of Keats is by Leigh Hunt. Although Keats' literary executor Charles Armitage Brown disliked Hunt's portrayal of his friend his own account of Keats life was not ready in time for this edition and would not see publication for another 108 years in 1937. He did however send some unpublished poems in his possession for inclusion in the volume. The memoir of Shelley was written by Mary Shelley who also helped the publication of this edition by allowing the publisher access to his papers. Although this volume was published by the Galignanis in Paris avoiding the British copyright and meaning no royalties would be due they did have the co-operation of family members and literary friends of all three poets when assembling this impressive volume.;. 1268602. Name of uncredited crew member David Dyer and "filming 12-18-72" on top right of each script in holograph ink. With holograph ink annotations to the credits of "Part 1."<br/><br/>Dan Curtis creator of the popular ABC vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows" 1967-1971 adapted and produced this version of the classic Mary Shelley 1818 novel with "Dark Shadows" screenwriter Sam Hall penning "Part 1" and screenwriter Richard Landau penning "Part 2."<br/><br/>Curtis' "Frankenstein" is a fairly faithful adaptation shot with television broadcasts cameras in Curtis' gothic soap opera style with a memorable performance from Bo Svenson as the monster.<br/><br/>Though well received when aired it was overshadowed by the Universal Television production "Frankenstein: The True Story" which aired in late 1973 on NBC. <br/><br/>"Frankenstein - Part 1"<br/>Red titled wrappers.
