A handsome example of the Julian edition published between 1926 and 1930 and limited to 780 sets between the UK and the US. Complete in 10 uniform volumes all in their vellum-backed dark-green boards with gilt-rule at the panels and gilt top-edges. Crisp and bright and VG with light soiling along a number of the spines. Still though very presentable. Internally very sharp as well with no writing or markings to speak of. The complete set edited by Roger Ingpen and Walter E. Peck. A radical in his poetry as well as in his political and social views Shelley did not achieve fame during his lifetime but recognition of his achievements in poetry grew steadily following his death and he became an important influence on subsequent generations of poets including Robert Browning Algernon Charles Swinburne Thomas Hardy and W. B. Yeats. American literary critic Harold Bloom describes him as "a superb craftsman a lyric poet without rival and surely one of the most advanced sceptical intellects ever to write a poem."<br>The Shelleys moved to Pisa in January 1820 ostensibly to consult a doctor who had been recommended to them. There they became friends with the Irish republican Margaret Mason Lady Margaret Mountcashell and her lover George William Tighe. Mrs Mason became the inspiration for Shelley's poem "The Sensitive Plant" and Shelley's discussions with Mason and Tighe influenced his political thought and his critical interest in the population theories of Thomas Malthus.<br><br> Size: Small quarto. Queen Mab achieved the status of a sacred text to the chartist movement and this is one of the early unauthorized reprints issued by the Carlile family. Their career as Queen Mab pirates was begun in 1822 by R. Carlile who reissued the sheets of W. Clark's 1821 edition Clark being in prison for this publication and went on to issue at least half a dozen more editions. With a one page publisher poem at end of Mab text and titled "To Harriet." Housman studied art in London and was a prolific and popular illustrator during the first few years of his career before focusing more on writing. Illustrated with eleven plates and a frontispiece. Collated complete.First published in 1820 'The Sensitive Plant' explores nature art and the human psyche. Written by Percy Bysshe Shelley this romantic poem comments on society's' view of perfection and humankind's place in the universe. Bound in the publisher's cloth. Externally excellent with light rubbing to the extremities and minor bumping to the spine. Light spots to endpapers and fore edge. Internally frontispiece and plate to page 20 are working loose and may detach. Otherwise firmly bound. Pages are bright with very light spotting to the first and last few pages. Beautifully illustrated with twelve tissue-guarded black and white plates by Laurence Housman. An excellent near fine copy the binding firm with just a little rubbing at the extremities the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The spine is slightly rolled. The contents with a small previous owner's signature to the top of the front endpaper are otherwise clean throughout. 'The Sensitive Plant' a relatively late poem in Shelley's short but prolific writing career takes a symbolic mythic approach to the themes of beauty and death. In his note on the illustrations Housman states his belief that illustration cannot improve or add to an already beautiful poem and can only capture the unique response of the individual reader; the richly detailed atmospheric garden he offers here is surely a worthy and beautiful response to Shelley's vision.
