With an unnumbered page of publisher's advertisements preceding the rear endpapers. Includes bookplate on front pastedown signifying its prior ownership by Colonel W. N. Lockyer R. A. Chief Inspector of Small Arms. This work begins with a brief biographical memoir of Percy Bysshe Shelley followed by some of his most famous long poems including 'Adonais. An Elegy on the Death of John Keats' and 'The Sensitive Plant' ending with 42 miscellaneous poems: among these are 'To A Skylark' 'Love's Philosophy' and 'Mont Blanc'. In full morocco binding with gilt borders and gilt decorated spine. Externally the work is generally smart with good colour and most of the gilding still bright save for a handful of areas notably: the corners the fore edge and the 'A' in 'BEAUTIES' in the gilt title where there is some loss. Some marks to the front and rear boards. Rubbing at the joints. Some bumping to the head and tail of the spine resulting in the beginnings of lifting at the latter. Offsetting to the front and rear boards. Bookplate on front pastedown signifying its prior ownership by Colonel W. N. Lockyer R. A. Chief Inspector of Small Arms. Internally hinges strained. The contents with the attractive red morocco and gilt ownership label of Margaret Louise Weyerhaeuser as well as her paper bookplate to the front pastedown and the very occasional dot of foxing to a few page margins are otherwise clean throughout. Jane Shelley's memoir of her father-in-law produced in response to Thomas Jefferson Hogg's unreliable 1858 biography of Shelley and containing the first publication of Shelley's Essay on Christianity as well as accounts of his association and correspondence with various other key Romantic figures. A very good set the bindings square and tight with a the odd minor mark to the boards a little rubbing to the joints and spine ends and a touch of bumping to the corners. The contents with the pencil ownership inscription of the author William St Clair to the front pastedown of the first volume and some light spotting to the preliminary pages are otherwise clean throughout. An attractive set. An early pirated pocket-sized edition of Shelley's poetical works the first to be issued by the publisher Charles Daly. In addition to its diminutive size and early date issued three years prior to Mary Shelley's official collected edition of 1839 the work is also notable for its engraved frontispiece which presents a version of the Curran portrait of Shelley apparently not found in any other edition of the poet's works.
