With original handwritten and signed presentations in both volumes from the translator Ernest Grégoire for Robert Watt.Robert Watt 1837-94 was a leading figure in the Danish modernist breakthrough 1870-90 and a famous figure in Danish cultural life in the second half of the 19th century. In spite of the age difference he became closely connected with Hans Christian Andersen and it was he who accompagnied Andersen to the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867. He was also the one to encourage Andersen to have his fairy tales translated into and published in French and he is the one who made this translation happen. Thus this particur presentation copy is of great interest. In his diaries from 1873 and 1874 Andersen fairly frequently writes about the preparation of this translation about Watt and Gregoire. On the 31st of March Vol. X p. 54-55 he writes: "Besøg af Watt der havde faaet Brev fra den franske Journalist Gregoire der vilde oversætte og lade illustrere mine Eventyr med Undtagelse af dem Soldi havde udgivet." "Visit by Watt who had received a letter from the French journalist Gregoire who wanted to translate my fairy tales and have them illustrated except for the ones that Soldi had published." own translation . On several occations Andersen worries about the rights to the French translations and he is not happy with the fact that Gregoire apparently claims them. - The entire day cough and my nerves dinner at Eduard Collin who wrote for me a letter for Gregoire according to my conception and not like Watt had given me to sign. As soon as evening fell Watt came and became ill disposed because of me not wanting to sign his letter said that MINE had no significance according to the law in Paris I did not understand all of his explanation and when he kept on going I became so nervous that I broke down crying and collapsed on the couch." own translation .Robert Watt later 1886 became the director of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen where he among many other things installed the famous rollar coaster. </em> hardcover

1820179668Copenhagen: Printed by Hartwig Friedrich Popp for the author 1820. First edition of this handy simplified signal book for merchant ships. Martensen developed his scheme from that of Nathaniel Squire whose English Universal Signal Book of 1817 was one of the earliest essays at such a telegraphic system. Rare no copies noted institutionally and just a single copy at auction. Martensen 1781-1822 was a Danish schoolmaster and ship-owner who lived in Flensburg in Schleswig who published the book in four languages his preferred Danish German the predominant tongue in his home town but also French - as Livre Universal de signaux - and English The Universal Signal Book. All editions are rare WorldCat locates a copy in Danish in the Royal Danish Library and another in NYPL but gives no locations for any of the other editions citing only the description in Bibliotheca Danica similarly no listings bar the Danish on KVK. Martensen took Nathaniel Squire's Universal Signal Book as an initial impetus to create this code it appeared in Danish in 1817 but in his introduction draws attention to the manifold "shortcomings and imperfections" in the Englishman's effort. Martensen also wrote several other books on seamanship navigation trading tariffs currency and mathematics almost certainly turning to the pen after his livelihood was taken from him in the war: "Sometime between December 1808 and June 1812 when after Denmark had sided with Napoleon in the war with the British his ship was captured and he was imprisoned thus losing his wealth and health. He died in 1822" Thompson p. 2. Octavo 202 x 131 mm. pp. 16. 2 folding engraved plates day and night signals tabulation of alphanumeric signals employing a system of just 5 different flags. Letterpress advertisement pasted to the front pastedown advises on how to identify your intention to use Martensen's code when trying to open communication with another vessel. Original mottled sheep-backed marbled boards strong reddish orange publisher's label to the front board. Just a little rubbed hand-written library title label to the front board stamp of "Signalvaesen A" - signal vessel A to the front pastedown attractive ink stamp of the Søe Officiers Archiv with inked accession data to the title page small stamps of the Marinens Bibliotek to rear endpapers and verso of one of the folding plates text leaves maybe a touch toned but overall very good and a very pretty copy. This seminal publication marked his stage-debut and was not only the first work that he wrote for the theatre but also the first of his works that was performed on the stage. It is with the present work "Love in Nicolai Tower" that Hans Christian Andersen inaugurated his dramatical production a genre that came to define much of his literary production for the next forty years over the cause of which he produced about as many plays - i.e. ab. 40. The question as to acceptance from the theatre and the the set-up of the plays however -especially at the beginning of his career - would often postpone the actual theatre debut by many months sometimes years. Thus many of his early plays were only performed on the stage much later. "Kjærlighed on Nicolai Taarn" however was accepted almost immediately and was performed already the following year marking his theatre debut. This very early Andersen-book is not commonly seen on the market.BFN: 28. </em> unknown
