This is the first time that Andersen uses the term "Eventyr" fairy tale the term which came to denote the genre for which he received world-wide fame as one of the most important writers of all time. "The Ghost" was later rewritten and published for the second time in Andersen's first fairy tale collection "Eventyr fortalte for Børn" PMM 299 1835 under the title "The Travelling Companion". As Andersen would later explain his first fairy tale was based upon a folk tale from Funen he had heard as a child. This seminal publication lays the foundation for Andersen's activity as an author of fairy tales. This collection furthermore contains 46 poems 20 of which are published here for the first time the rest were published separately in various periodicals. BFN 51. unknown

The fact that your endpapers are paper available at the time to the trade edition tends to date it.It is possible that someone or firm had this done for your copy #20. Translation: As thank for every smile I recieved in the old year from my small friend Jørgen I bring him here a picture-book and in this he will in due time read and think of his old friend H. C. Andersen. Copenhagen new-year week 1862. Julius Exner 1825-1910 was a Danish painter known for his romantic paintings of the life of the peasants. Christian Winther 1796-1876 was one of the greatest Danish poets of the 19th century. Winther is best known for his poem "Hjortens Flugt" which is considered to be one of the classics of Danish literature. The inscription is written to Jørgen Hansen Koch 1861-1935. Jørgen who was only 1 year old at the time the inscription was written later became president of the Maritime and Commercial Court and Det Classenske Fideicommis. Jørgen and his family had a close relationship with H. C. Andersen and they are mentioned frequently in his diaries. H. C. Andersen wrote in his diary that he visited the Koch family January 2 1862. It was presumably during that visit that he gave Jørgen this copy. Works of other authors inscribed by H. C. Andersen are very rare. unknown

1924032471
London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited 1924 A very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in full gilt-decorated vellum binding signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration. He began the work in 1912 but the disruption caused by World War I meant that it was not published until 1924 - and although a beautiful production it could not afford the number of plates that embellished East of the Sun West of the Moon his previous work. The market for expensive illustrated gift books declined significantly after the War and Nielsen only illustrated two more works before moving to Copenhagen and working on set designs for the theatre. This book is number 119 of 500 printed. The vellum binding has bright illustration. It has some grubbiness and darkening to the spine; a slight bump to the bottom front corner; and slight marking to the back board particularly the bottom corner. The spine is cocked to the front. Top page edges are gilt; side edge is untrimmed. The contents are in very bright and clean condition; occasional very light spotting to tissue guards. There is a slight crease to the tissue guard to the frontispiece and a small light brown area to the bottom margin of p 153 lightly mirrored on 152. There is a small scuff and slight loss to the bottom of the rear free endpaper. A very nice copy.
Hodder and Stoughton Limited hardcover
