A MOST UNUSUAL TURIN PRINTING of Roberti's treatise on ethics and integrity nominated by Gamba as one of his better works and first published in Bassano the author's birthplace in 1784. In it Roberti takes his inspiration from Montesquieu and others in exploring the distinction between honesty and truthfulness uprightness and moral rectitude. The treatise is divided into two parts; the first exploring six 'doubts' the second concentrating on six founding principles. Both parts contain numerous examples some literary and some factual. Contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards gilt lettering to the spine some cracking to joints but thay remain firm. EDWARD VESEY BLIGH'S COPY WITH HIS SIGNATURE ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. A NOTABLE COPY OF ONE OF KEIGHTLEY'S FINEST CLASSICAL COMMENTARIES. Remembered today primarily for his 'Fairy Mythology' 1828 Thomas Keightley 1789-1872 was also a classical historian and scholar of note; his editions of Greek and Roman texts were produced mainly from Trinity College Dublin. His 'Fasti' is based on the Krebs text and Keightley notes the most important variant readings of the fifty-eight collated MSS of the poem together with not unnaturally appropriate references to his own 'Mythology of Greece and Italy' published eight years previously. The edition received several laudatory reviews notably in the 'Gentleman's Magazine' and was adopted for use by at least one major public school. The Hon. Interior pages contain mild marginal age toning; a chip in the outer margin of the portrait leaf is neatly patched. An old ink shelf number is written on the upper verso of the title. Vincent de Voiture 1598-1648 was a French poet and letter writer. Voitures letters are known for their wit and fine prose. This edition is possibly an Elzevir imprint published in Holland or Belgium.
