The opposition party the nascent Whigs had a medal struck in Poland to commemorate the release of one of their leaders the Earl of Shaftesbury who had been held in the Tower on charges of treason. Publisher's catalogue dated March 1859 bound in the front of volume 1 between the pastedown and free endpaper. This is a set in original publisher's cloth in superb condition. The cloth is still bright and fresh with hardly any trace of age or wear. Dryden issued his translation of Plutarch's Lives from 1683-1686. One leaf C4 pp. 15-16 in `The Life' has a 9 cm horizontal closed tear near the bottom edge. The top of the running title on p. 43 G2r is shaved. Otherwise some mild age-staining and spotting throughout and in very good condition overall. This was the next to the last of Dryden's plays to be produced. Owing to Dryden's illness the fifth act of the play was completed by Thomas Southerne. The life of Cleomenes was translated from Plutarch by Thomas Creech. It is believed that the revival of some of Shakespeare's Roman plays about this time turned the attention of both playwrights and public to classical themes. Dryden's own original contributions include the dedication and the substantial postscript in which he expounds upon the Divine Right of Kings.
