In full calf bindings. Small losses of leather to back strip head and tail. Volume I boards detached. Volume II front board detached with rear board tenderly held by one cord only. Volume III lacking both boards. Volume IV joints starting with boards holding firm. Volume VI lacking front board with rear board tenderly held by one cord only. Stamps to front free endpapers. Internally generally firmly bound with pages 323-326 of volume III detached and loosely inserted with a significant closed tear and pages 107-110 of volume IV detached and loosely inserted. Bound without half title as issued.The story which in Dryden's early effort had been intended to suggest a parallel to the English rebellion was now to be applied to the contest of the court against Shaftesbury and Monmouth. Dryden however did his best to extenuate his own responsibility in a Vindication of the Duke of Guise separately published.This play was first performed December 4th 1682 to dubious if not unfavourable reviews but with revisions found success with the United Companies of London.John Dryden 1631 - 1700 was the poet laureate of England in 1668.
