R21069.Very scarce to find copies both separately bound such as this and of the originating work itself. Bound in a later half crushed morocco with decorative paper covered boards and gilt detailing. Bound with later blanks to the front and rear. This political satire serves as John Dryden's response to the Whigs' decision to strike a medal to celebrate the acquittal of the Earl of Shaftesbury on charges of high treason. A fierce attack the poem criticises the Whigs who supported Shaftesbury and was part of a public dispute that involved Thomas Shadwell's counter-poem 'The Medal of John Bayes'. Dryden was appointed England's first Poet Laureate and was a dominating literary figure of Restoration England so much to the point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden.
