Some slight marginal darkening early ink name on title lower fore-corners of last few gatherings show an intermittent minor discoloration otherwise internally a very good crisp copy. First edition of Dryden's translation of Louis Maimbourg's work undertaken at the request of Charles II the dedicatee and subject of the frontis. Dryden's own original contributions include the dedication and the substantial postscript in which he expounds upon the Divine Right of Kings. A very good copy. "The break in signatures and pagination is evidently the result of division of copy between two compositors as may be seen by the variation in typography. The second compositor began his portion with the third alphabet. His pagination was intended to correspond but was off by ten for it begins with 721 not 731" Pforzheimer. Maimbourg was a French Jesuit who is well known for his 1675 'Histoire des Croisades' in which is regarded to be the first use of the term "crusade".First published in French this faithful translation to English was done by Dryden under the request of Charles II. Dryden was England's first Poet Laureate an eminent poet critic translator and playwright who dominated the literary scene of Restoration England.Ink inscription of James Gisborne to the title page. In the original cloth binding. Externally worn. Rear board is held by one cord only. Front joint and hinge are strained. Rubbing to the leather. A small amount of loss of leather to the head and tail of the spine and to the front joint. Crack to the spine. Bumping to the extremities. Paste downs and endpapers are discoloured endpapers are edge worn. Internally binding is strained in places. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean. Some age marks and wear on spine and rubbing/fading to gilt. Tiny sign of intrepid book worm. Vol II same condition as above although spine has separated somewhat from front board and leather on front board his lifted a little but binding holding nicely. Assumed same intrepid book worm has left tiny hole through all pages. Inside contents of both volumes are in incredibly good condition with only slight aging to pages considering age. 16877544London: Printed for Jacob Tonson 1687. Large 8vo 6 145 1 pp half 20th century library binding preserving the original marbled boards new endpapers. "Second Edition" stated to title page. This copy inscribed by Alexander R. Stephens of Augusta Georgia on the last page; once in a 19th century hand and once in 1909. Records indicate that Stephens or Stevens emigrated from Ireland to Augusta in 1820. Several other names are also present on the first and last few pages--John O'Hara dated 1819 John Campbell Agnes Cambpell A McDonald and J. Buchanan as well as an ink sketch of a garden scene to verso of title page. The first four leaves a blank the title page and the first two text leaves have been encased in protective plastic which does appear to be removable the pages are not stuck to it. The title page and the first text page are wrinkled and heavily toned with chipping along margins resulting in slight loss to decorative borders on title page and slight text loss to first text leaf. Otherwise the pages are toned and foxed with slight trimming to margins resulting in a tiny bit of loss to first or last letter of text. Some cover wear and mild soiling present.
