The second edition of this well-known biography revised and augmented.Including Volumes I and II lacking Volume III. Written by eighteenth-century Scottish biographer James Boswell. Boswell's biography of Samuel Johnson is often claimed to be the greatest biography written in English and the text played an important role in the development of the modern genre of biography. Whilst Boswell's personal acquaintance with his subject began rather later in 1763 when Johnson was fifty four years old Boswell covered the entirety of Johnson's life by means of additional research. Including an engraved frontispiece portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds to Volume I and a folding 'Round Robin' plate with facsimile signatures to Volume II. Collated and complete. Samuel Johnson was an English author well-known in the literary world for his many lasting contributions to various areas of humanist art including poetry essay-writing biography and more. He is described by the 'Oxford Dictionary of National Biographies' as the most distinguished man of letters in English history. Containing a contemporary ink inscription to the front free-endpaper of each volume: 'Edmund Calamy Esq to Ann Pope Feb the 3rd 1798'. ESTC Citation No. T64482 Bound in contemporary quarter calf binding with marbled boards. Externally some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the joints and spines. Containing a contemporary ink inscription to the front free-endpaper of each volume. Internally hinges are lightly strained though remaining binding is firm. Light spotting to the first and last few pages and the odd spot to the pages which are otherwise bright and clean especially considering the age of the work. Good Charles Dilly hardcover

With an engraved and illustrated title-page featuring Johnson and Boswell strolling through London and with 54 additional full-page engravings throughout as well as a map at the rear endleaves featuring the journey of Boswell and Johnson to Scotland and the Hebrides. Thick royal 8vo handsomely bound in the publisher's polished grained cloth the spine lettered in gilt the upper cover with a gilt illustrative device showing Boswell and Johnson strolling with one another top edge gilt. xx 609 pp. A very fine copy of this edition beautifully preserved and in a very pleasing condition a tight clean and crisp copy the text and plates all bright and especially fresh the binding strong solid and very attractive virtually pristine. A VERY HANDSOME COPY OF TWO OF THE GREAT BOOKS OF THE AGE BOUND TOGETHER INTO THIS FAMOUS PRESENTATION WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ERNEST SHEPARD SIGNED BY HIM. Celebrated for its intimacy and vividness Boswell's Life of Johnson "is one of the best books in the world. It is assuredly a great very great work. Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic Poets--Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of Dramatists--Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of Orators than Boswell is the first of Biographers." Boswell learned a great deal about the art of biography from his subject and brought to his task boundless curiosity persistence and zest.<br> The tour proved to be inspirational for both men. Johnson published A JOURNEY TO THE WESTERN ISLANDS OF SCOTLAND in 1775 and Boswell in addition to this work used his notes from the tour extensively in his LIFE OF JOHNSON published in 1791. "As a narrative of personal adventures Boswell's account is to be preferred to Johnson's.
