An important copy bound without the map. <b>ODNB </b>calls this a "savagely hostile" book. We have seen the book referred to as "racist." It was written by a British diplomat who spent several years in the country. This copy belonged to Haldane Macfall while he was writing his classic picaresque West Indian masterpiece set in Barbados <i>The Wooings of Jezebel Pettyfer </i>1897. Ownership inscription inside front cover: "C. Haldane Macfall 60 Wynnstay Gardens Kensington SW '96." Macfall has made marginal scorings and underlinings on 82 pages in pencil the greatest number in the section on voodoo and also written 44 words. On free half of front end paper he cites three books on Haiti calling Moreau de St. Mery's "excellent & truthful." It is interesting that Macfall should focus on voodoo which St. John said involved cannibalism. Spine lettered in gold "St. John's/ Hayti." Orig. coated yellow endpapers browned to reverse; hinges cracked but firm. Stitching tender in places with a few gatherings just starting. Some foxing to a few plates and adjacent pages mostly light but heavier to several of the tinted plates. Folding maps each with one short closed tear to inner edge. Armorial bookplate with motto 'Festina Lente'. A pleasing set of this rare work in bright original bindings. Second edition revised. Published a year after the first St. John added to this second edition an introduction a chapter on pirates another on animals an index and occasionally introduced some new anecdote. The four hand-coloured plates illustrate carnivorous pitcher plants <i>Nepenthes</i> and are engraved after illustrations first published in the <i>Transactions of the Linnean Society</i>.'Borneo one of the most interesting and romantic regions in the world' thus starts this fascinating book. Its author Spenser St. John 1825-1910 was a British diplomat and explorer. He was private secretary to Sir James Brooke the Rajah of Sarawak in Borneo. In 1856 St. John was appointed British consul-general to the native states of Borneo; he explored the country and went further into the interior than any previous European traveller. His habit of wearing native dress resulted in complaints to London. The present book based on his full and accurate journals also supplemented by other visitors' testimonies is a well-written and beautifully illustrated account of the author's travels. ODNB. Uniformly bound in full leather with decorative gilt covers front and back each with an armorial seal raised bands on gilt decorated spines inner dentelles all edges gilt ribbon markers with all covers still attached frontis-piece in Volume I is present foxed. There are two bookplates inside each volume each with a history attached to the owners. The first is E. Dennison being Eduardo Denison. There is a Latin inscription to him in Volume I "Egregio Juveni Eduardo Denison Coll: Oriel: Supt. Ord. Commensali Publica Examinatione In Litenis humaniovibus Primam Clafsem Adepts. D. D. Praepositus et Socii Osielenses. MDCCCXXII". It appears that this set was a gift for passing an exam of importance. In 1868 Argentina Eduardo Denison along with Octavia Hill created Labor Centers Worker's Clubs and Schools to help free those in poverty banishing the systems of handouts in favor of work. He also worked with UNESCO analyzing the influence of Education in the economic growth of a country. The second bookplate being armorial bears the name of W. Harry Rylands 1847-1922 a prolific author Secretary to the Society of Biblical Archaeology specializing in Oriental Archaeology and the Hittite Language. He also designed a fount of Hittite type with this just touching upon his extensive activities in the fields of literature and antiquities. Covers show edge/corner wear some upper spine weakness due to the books being improperly pulled from shelves interior shows occasional light foxing. Printed For F. C. and J. Rivington, T.
