'The Shepheardes Calendar' was Spenser's first major work it emulates Virgil's 'Eclogues'. Both of these works are present in this collection which also includes many of Spenser's minor poems including hymns 'Colin Clout's Come home Again' and 'Amoretti or Sonnets'. Including a memoir of Spenser and also critical dissertations by the Reverend George Gilfillan. George Gilfillan was a spasmodic poet who also edited the works of several British poets. In half calf signed bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally excellent with back strips just a touch age toned and instances of minor rubbing to back strip heads. 1778033153Edinburg: John Bell at the Apollo Press 1778 A complete set of Spenser from the Bell's Edition - forming Vols 15 to 22 of the original 109 volumes. In very good condition. This set looks to be from the traveling library - with each volume being slim and bound in full red leather with gilt lines to boards and spine and gilt decoration at the board edges and inner edges. Gilt titles and volume and series numbers to spine. All page edges gilted - in circa 3 of the volumes the gilting has resulted in the occasional page appearing unopened at the top edge. All the volumes have their original page markers and all are very clean and sound. Spines tend to be darkened and there is light wear/scuffing at corners and spine ends - occasional bumping or greater wear at corners and occasional scuff or pit to boards. Endpapers marbled. Each volume has 2 initial and 2 or 3 final blanks an engraved title and 2 further title pages - one for the series and one for the Spenser set. Vol I has a portrait of Edmund Spenser. All volumes are complete with a contents listing at the end - Vol I containing introductory material and Vol VIII containing a Glossary of 'Old and Obscure Words'. Vol I: 257pp scuff to top spine end. Vol II: 243pp. Vol III: 258pp bump to top corner of back board. Vol IV: 266 pp - couple of tiny top page edge tears where gilt has partly held a couple of pages together at the top edge. Vol V: 261pp more pronounced scuffing to an area of the front board and slight warp to boards. Vol VI: 252pp more pronounced pitting on back board engraved title has lost the bottom edge below the picture frame with its text. Vol VII: 236pp. Vol VIII: 248pp pitting to front board. Marbled endpages have previous owner's sticker to top edge of front pastedown and light sunning to edges. Text block has light sunning to fore edge and top edge light scuffing to lower edge and light soiling to lower edge of volume two. All edges marbled. Boards are clean with light cracking and chipping to leather at spine bumping and moderate rubbing to corners and light rubbing to edges. Binding is tight boards slightly bow outward at fore edge. There is one full page illustration for each month illustrations surrounding the text of each page and a pictorial cloth binding. Collated complete. Better known for his epic poem 'The Faerie Queene' here Spenser presents a series of bucolic pastorals depicting the life of a shepherd through the twelve months of the year. Curiously the term 'sarcasm' here has its first recorded use in English. All illustrations are the work of celebrated artist Walter Crane a notable figure of the Arts and Crafts movement and producer of paintings illustrations children's books ceramic tiles and wallpapers. A pioneer in art education for the young he is also remembered for his creation of various iconic images associated with the Socialist movement of the day. Crane is considered to be the most influential and amongst the most prolific children's book illustrator of his day and also contributed illustrations to an edition of Spenser's 'Faerie Queene'.
