Numerous full page illustrations as well as head and tail pieces original wrappers bound in light browning to endpapers only attractive contemporary inscription to a front blank in volume I. Original gilt and red decorated cream buckram t.e.g. the volumes still with their plain d.w.'s with holes in the spines to enable the titles to be read these with some wear and loss and with half of the wrapper to volume II absent but as a result the set is in excellent condition and is still held in the original green cloth box this with some staining and wear to the fold-down front. With illustrations and a biographical introduction to the sixteenth century poet. A privately printed set of the complete works of Edmund Spenser with an autobiographical introduction by the literary editor Alexander Grossart. With four illustrations to volume I collated but Hamerton's Woodcuts and the facsimile called for. With three illustrations to volume III collated but lacking frontispiece. With two illustrations to volume V collated and complete. Only 150 copies of this set were printed for private circulation only. Complete in nine volumes. Whilst the title pages in the set state ten volumes the final book was not published. Grossart provides a detailed biographical introduction to the sixteenth century poet in the first volume which is followed by Spenser's first major work The Shepheardes Calendar. This is followed by Complaints his collection of poems that mournfully or mockingly express the poet's grievances and his narrative elegy for the heiress Douglas Howar Daphnaida. Spenser's celebrates the Tudor dynasty in allegorical poem The Faerie Queen which can be found in volumes five to seven followed by a collection of his letters. The prior owner's pencil inscription can be found to the half title or the recto of the front endpaper of the volumes 'S. B. M. In a full green cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Bumped to the head and the tail of the spines with some closed tears to each across the set. Lightly bumped to the extremities. The front hinge has failed to volumes I and IX and the rear hinge has failed to volume IV but the spines have been re-adhered to all three volumes. Both hinges are starting but firm to volume II the front hinge is starting to volume VII and the rear hinges is starting but firm to volumes V and IX. Internally the binding is strained to volumes I IV and IX with the front endpaper disbound to the latter volume. Otherwise the volumes are generally firmly bound. Fine contemporary uniform bindings by Zaehnsdorf of restrained but elegant half brown morocco with marbled boards and 5 raised bands to the spines lettered in gilt; bindings very good with a little gentle wear only spines very slightly faded. All edges marbled to match boards and end-papers. Contents clean and tight; a little foxing more or less confined to the front and rear blanks otherwise unmarked. A superb set of this rare and desirable edition limited to just 100copies. Provenance: With the attractive bookplate of Claude Goldsmit-Montefiore to most front paste-downs. This edition was intended as a stylistic companion to Dent's Le Morte d'Arthur 1894-95 illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley and as a competitor to the George Allen edition of The Faerie Queene illustrated by Walter Crane and published the same year. Fairfax-Muckley 1862-1926 was an influential leader of the arts and crafts Birmingham School having studied painting and drawing at the Birmingham School of Art in the early 1880s. A 1901 profile by the Society of Designers declares that he "has always had a strong bent towards the straightforward methods of the early painters. as witness the beautiful designs for his well-known edition of the 'Faerie Queene' which fully express his natural admiration of the early Italian work" p. 171. Dent commissioned Beardsley and Fairfax-Muckley to illustrate his deluxe arts and crafts publications in an effort to emulate the success of the Kelmscott Press. An additional limitation of 100 copies on handmade paper was also issued. 2 vols quarto. Some minor marks to the cloth on a few of the boards but the spines all clean and the gilt bright so the set looks great on the shelf. 18972945London: J.M. Dent 1897. Chivers bindings. Fine. STUNNING CHIVERS VELLUCENT BINDINGS. One of 100 large-paper copies illustrated by Louis Fairfax Muckley. The three thick quarto volumes are elegantly printed on handmade paper and illustrated throughout with images and designs by the British artist and illustrator Louis Fairfax Muckley. The illustrations are magnificent and feature the plates in two states red and black.<br /> <br /> The bindings by Chivers however are the star of the show and perfectly complement the text. For the front boards Muckley has created an intricate design featuring a knight and lady on galloping horses surrounded by decorative borders and gilt titling. Each spine depicts a lady emerging from a colorful background while each rear board has a stylized dragon seemingly jumping out from the binding. While the outlines of the designs are the same on each volume they are each painted with different colors creating a unique look and mood for each.<br /> <br /> On Cedric Chivers’s “vellucent†bindings:<br /> <br /> Chivers created a masterful binding technique in the late 19th century he called “vellucent†– a portmanteau combining “vellum†and “translucentâ€. The process was arduous but the results were stunning with artwork seeming to glow under a layer of thin protective vellum.<br /> <br /> His process began with a decorative design—in the case of these volumes artwork by Louis Fairfax Murray – created on paper or thin parchment. The artwork was then placed underneath a sheet of vellum that was extremely thin and specially treated to be translucent allowing the colors to almost shine like a stained glass window. The final step was particularly tricky – since vellum is not particularly flexible it required expert craftsmanship to lay it smoothly over the book's boards and spine without wrinkles or bubbles. The result is a binding that doubles as a work of fine art.<br /> <br /> The bindings are stamped “Bound by Cedric Chivers†in gilt on the rear dentelles and decoratively written on the rear endpaper of volume 1 likely by Chivers is the note: “THIS BOOK IS BOUND BY / CEDRIC CHIVERS BATH / 2 COPIES ONLY WITH THIS DESIGN / THIS IS NO 1â€. Anecdotally however we are aware of three copies that have been bound with this design although without the written limitation.<br /> <br /> Provenance: There is a note in pencil in the first volume that these are from the Robert Hoe collection but we have not been able to confirm this.<br /> <br /> London: J.M.
