Castiglione served at the Qing court for fifty years working under the Chinese name Lang Shining. A master of vividly naturalistic draftsmanship and large-scale compositions in Italy and Portugal he had worked as a muralist Castiglione successfully combined Western realism with traditional Chinese conventions of brushwork in a manner that suited the imperial taste. Descriptively complex technically finished and monumental in scale Castiglione's vividly realistic painting style perfectly served the emperor's documentary purposes as well as his predilection for self-promotion on a grandiose scale". ill., br. La prima città ideale dell'Umanesimo è Castiglione Olona, rifondata nel 1422 e ultimata verso il 1440 dal cardinale Branda Castiglioni sulle terre di famiglia. Non si tratta del semplice abbellimento di un centro urbano, bensì della progettazione di un nucleo visto come spazio ideale per l'abitabilità umana, insieme paradigma e utopia. È il primo caso dell'Umanesimo, anteriore di un trentennio a Pienza, e capostipite di una lunga seriazione che giunge fino al Ventesimo secolo. Il progetto risale al cardinale Branda, protagonista dell'età dei Concili (Costanza, Basilea, Ferrara-Firenze) e grande diplomatico al servizio europeo della Santa Sede. Questo spiega il secondo aspetto del suo progetto: fare di Castiglione una sintesi dell'Europa, un microcosmo che riassume il macrocosmo. Il volume è finalizzato a una lettura nuova e sistematica della città ideale, con importanti acquisizioni attributive, cronologiche, iconografiche e iconologiche, e con le ultime risultanze dei restauri.
