186340961
London : Kelly & Co. 1863. Second edition : the county-only variant omitting the Bristol section and hence with irregular pagination. An alphabetical gazetteer of the county from Abbenhall to Yate listing all the principal inhabitants both private and commercial with a welter of further material on schools post-offices carriers etc. A second alphabetical section gives a court directory of the gentry while a third offers a trades directory - from accountants in Cheltenham to the zinc warehouse in Gloucester. The final section comprises a riot of type-faces in an unbridled display of advertising - not just from the county but from London and the manufacturers of Birmingham and Sheffield. Super royal 8vo 27cm. xii187-487i76pp. Folding map of the county by Francis Paul Becker & Son. Original red cloth blocked in gilt and blind by Leighton Son & Hodge with their stamp; an indifferent copy - the case worn torn and somewhat marked and faded; internally some tanning and mild spotting with some chips and creases; rear endpaper cracking but a serviceable working copy of an uncommon survival. Contemporary 1863 ownership inscription of John Wilson Wilson and later one of John Morris.
London : Kelly & Co., 1863. hardcover
