"Mitchell was a trailblazer for the research work she did in the late 1960s and early 1970s on the pottery methods and designs used by Native people who once lived in the Southeastern United States including the ancestors of the Cherokee. In 1967 Mitchell began creating objects from clay that she and her husband Bob found in a pond near their Vinita home.
