196761171bdEdinburgh: The Nature Conservancy 1967. Quarto paperbound stapled gold illustrated covers From Foreword: The purposes of this report are to review the main findings of the Nature Conservancy’s work on red deer and to draw attention to other work in progress. Nature Conservancy research on red deer began with a survey from 1953-1959 organised by Dr. Fraser Darling. This gathered information on the distrubition and abundance of red deer in Scotland by direct survey methods and demonstrated that red deer coud be counted. In six years this survey covered about 160000 acres of deer ground 112400 acres of recognised deer forest and 511000 acres of other land regularly occupied by red deer and 52653 deer were counted 16068 stags 26 242 hinds and 10 343 calves. Large scale deer surveys have now become the responsibility of the Red Deer Commission and up to the present time over half of the total ground regularly occupied by red deer over 3 million acres has now been surveyed. These extensive data are not discussed in this report since they have not yet been analysed in detail. When the island of Rhum was acquired in 1957 as a National Nature Reserve the Conservancy started managing a wild red deer population. This work was later supplemented by research on the mainland to gather comparative population data. The island and mainland deer programs are discussed in this report. 1888264109London: John Murray 1888. viii 571p. plus publisher's appended ads: "Murray's Handbook Advertiser 1890-1891 containing Useful Information for Travellers Railway and Steamboat Companies Hotels and Miscellaneous Advertisements 48p. The familiar Murray's format similar to the Baedeker formula 7x4.5 inch semi-flexible red cloth boards gilt-titled. This copy was given a lot of use by one Edith Howell Perkins datelining "Berlin Oct. 1890". Edith boldly pencilled her itinerary all over the preliminaries erased spottily from titlepage cast checkmarks and brackets at other points. Her copy's spine panel is badly sunned with titling near illegible the head is pulled a half-inch at both joints expect general edgewear both hinges are expertly reinforced with white paper tape both feel sound to our touch as is the large folded map of Russia which didn't need it in rear pocket both hinges feel sound. Sounds like a mess but isn't: the textblock is square and tight the hinges really are "repaired" the small folded maps are all unmolested the endpocket map unfolds clean and sound and re-folds without problems: a good well good-only copy. 1909018493Very Good. 1909. Photo album with 25 silver-gel photographic prints of Muir Woods California taken in 1909. Album covers are brown burlap with title label on front; covers measures 11 ½" x 7 ¼"; black album leaves all have been used. Photos measure between 3 ½" x 3 ½" and 6 ½" x 4 ¼"; a few have captions on the photograph or underneath it in pencil; most have good contrast and detail but a few have poor contrast and focus. Album covers have light wear to edges; photos have light silvering to moderate silvering or deterioration. Overall very good. This album belonged to Virginia and Thomas Palmer-Mitchell. Most of the images depict a group of young men and women posing in Muir Woods all looking carefree and happy among the iconic Redwood trees. Noteworthy images depict the party on the "Gravity Train" up Mount Tamalpais and another shows a cabin in the woods. The log cabin was built in 1905 and was located near the north end of the redwood forest. Although the photo is captioned "A cabin Muir Woods - John Muir's" the nicely situated cabin was likely built for William Kent who donated the land to make Muir Woods National Monument. It is said that John Muir stayed at the cabin at one time Historic Resource Study for Muir Woods National Monument. A nice grouping of early photographs of this popular national monument. ; 14 pp . unknown books
