AN EROTIC JAPANESE PAINTING ON SILK: A BUDDHIST PRIEST MAKING LOVE TO A WOMAN

21004101Japan ca. 1915. A color silk painting 30 x 20 cm. very clean and solid on very fine silk finely drawn & executed in color gouache. RARE ORIGINAL PAINTED ART WORK . . . AN ORIGINAL FINELY HAND-PAINTED . . . COLOR EROTIC SCENE . . . TAISHO PERIOD 1912-1926 . This work shows a Buddhist monk wearing a common Kimono with shaved head disguised as a commoner. He secretly visits his lover and willing bed partner. She appears to be a house wife obviously of another man. Buddhist priests never married though they carried on an erotic life style. . She wears an elaborate silk Kimono with period coiffure. Spreading her legs keeping her knees back welcoming her lover. Her feet express ecstasy curled and pointing upwards clutching her lover tight and close to her. The monk holds her back firmly and with his right hand grasping her knee keeping them up and back thus forcing her wide open. . She is flushed with excitement showing a pink facial flush eyes closed in ecstasy. There is a gray Furoshiki large silk scarf tied into a bag above the woman. It most likely contains the monks Buddhist robes. He thus avoids the attention of others when walking the streets. . CONDITION: The painting is flawlessly executed. It's very clean and solid no stain or other issues of importance. . The work was probably mounted on a stiff album page in its past. It has been expertly 'lifted' and shows the usual but minimal remains at the right and left edges which does not encroach on the painting. What little remains is easily matted out. There are a few small verso mends using period Washi handmade Japanese paper which will not be very visible from the front when mounted on white paper. . A very nicely executed example with good colors ready for matting and framing . Color photos are posted to our website. . REFERENCE: . Erotic books prints & paintings were "suppressed" by the Tokugawa Shogunate therefore the majority of these kinds of erotic sold on the 'black market' and not distributed openly. . These erotic paintings drawings and woodblock printed Shunga books & art remained on the 'fringe.' The Shogunate enforced stiff penalties for artists block cutters publishers & printers of erotica. The Shogunate and its sensors would not approve or provide Kiwame censor's seal for this category of art or books. Items without Kiwame were subject to confiscation and anyone involved with the items when distributed to the general public were often harshly punished with imprisonment. These remained in 'private collections' and were strictly & discretely sold traded and distributed 'under the table' during the Edo period 1603-1867. . REFERENCES: . A SUITE OF TWELVE UNIQUE EROTIC PAINTED CHINESE SCENES: From the Ch'ing Ping Mei

96105001China n.d. c. 1790. An erotic hand painted color scroll 12 individual scenes each painting ca. 21.5 x 15 cm. overall width is 18 cm. in very clean pristine condition external phoenix cloth inside dark blue silk mounting jade ends. This work is an excerpt from the Chinese erotic novel the Chin P'ing Mei written during the Ming dynasty. It depicts the sexual exploits of the hero Hsi-men and is China's most famous classic novel of erotica. This lovely hand scroll illustrates twelve erotic scenes with Hsi-men and his willowy female consorts. Sapphicsm a common theme but this example shows the hero engaged in a host of sexual pleasures. He adores the vulva and her tiny "Lotus-hooks" or bound feet. In one superb view he is embraced by three lovely paramours as he attempts to gratify each with his tender touch. In another sensual scene while his "jade stick" pierces and ravishes an old favorite a younger concubine is voyeuring at them with desire as we see her pink-flushed face as she masturbates with relish. Several other marvelous paintings show various positions employed for mutual benefit. Each scene is done in the Ming dynasty style with lovely furniture and furnishings graphically illustrated including scholar's desk items scrolls brushes vases flowers & other period objects. Executed in fine color brush work mounted with silk borders paper mounted some 3 meters plus long embellished with pale jade end pieces. BIBLIOGRAPHY: R. H. Each painting shows a couple engaged in or preparing to enjoy sexual pleasure some with genitals exposed each painted with the most delicate and beautiful colors as their faces display a pink flush with excitement. The girls all have "Golden Lotus" feet or bound feet with tiny shoes tied on they are all dressed in lovely flowing gown with natural garden setting in the background with colorful flowers & trees. 1. The first scene shows a very young couple preparing to make love. 2. The next is of a young girl using a dildo while a male lover looks on with erect penis. 3. The third shows a girl sitting on her lover's knee as he fondles her vulva. 4. Next shows a couple engaging in love-making in the garden as the girl sits facing her lover. The genitals are shown where engaged. 5. Two girls prepare to engage in love-making. They are both on a sofa one reclines holds a bronze mirror while the other girl holds her lover's right leg up. Both share looking into the mirror to see the erotic scene some mild discoloration on her hip & face. 6. Shows a couple in the garden while the girl rests her face on her arm on a rock bending over exposing her posterior while her lover enters from the rear and holds her fast. 7. A couple are seated the man first then the woman sits upon his lap as she holds up one knee for deep penetration. 8. While the mistress sleeps on her bed in the background the master unsatisfied pulls the servant girl to his exposed penis. She resists. 9. A lovely garden scene shows the couple with the man holding the girl by the shoulder as they hug each other. 10. In the garden girl holds a fan while she awaits her lover who sends away a young girl so they may begin their love-making. 11. While standing in a shallow stream the master exposes his erect penis while the girl pulls him toward her showing him her exposed vulva as they both hold up their gowns giving view to their genitals. 12. A couple on a blanket with the man in the superior position as he mounts her while she entwines her legs around him holding him fast. 13. A garden scene shows a man on a wall as he "dallies" with a young maid-girl who reaches up to touch his hands likely to help him down. Probably a secret meeting with his young lover. 14. Shows a beautiful woman at an open gate while her lover passes by she flashes an enticing look his way. He turns his head towards her he is accompanied by a young servant- girl who carries his lute as he passes with his fan and gives her a good look. 15. The last is a view of the male-scholar as he sits at his desk and books while looking out a large round window at the girl. She is wearing a lovely saffron robe likely exposing her posterior to him in an inviting sexy stance. All of these lovely paintings show the most pleasant and joyful expressions on the face and especially in the eyes and lips. Books of this subject style are vintage are scarce. The Chinese had a very naturalistic view and open attitude toward sex during this period. Love-making and erotic scenes of this subject were drawn in the most natural ways. People are shown with very pleasant "Yin & Yang" looks between men and women and the act of "Clouds & Rain" love-making are done with pleasant and enjoyable expressions BINDING: The work is period bound and mounted with silk each painting is on silk. The accordion folded book is bound in hard-wood covers. Nicely executed mounted & bound in the traditional Chinese style. On the opposite pages to the paintings is a lovely hand-made gold-flecked Chinese papery. A wonderful example of the best of Chinese painting and bookbinding art form. . unknown
