Wood 1852-1944 was a writer lawyer and prominent supporter of radical causes and Earthly Discourse is a collection of satirical stories in this vein. Wood was friendly with many activists and writers including John Steinbeck whose Of Mice and Men was published the year before this book was inscribed. "The Cats" was the name of Wood's house: the name of the town means "the cats" in Spanish. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece. Original light brown cloth titles to spine and front board in blue top edge blue. With dust jacket. Bindings lightly rubbe and marked spine a little tanned endpapers tanned contents toned. Front pastedown has a tiny PO's stamp at top. Text has a dent/warp to the lower right corners and a very faint water stain there but only visible on pgs 379-415. Text unmarked. Faint water stain to lower outer text edge by that corner. DJ is GOOD ; not clipped $4.50 front has two teensy spots otherwise the DJ is very clean. Flaps very clean. Corners and spine ends have wear and chips no chip deeper than 1/4 in. at spine ends. Rear flap fold has three small chips. Rear lower edge has some mild warping probably from water.
