A sharp example. In 1941 Steinbeck met "with officials of the Foreign Information Service a newly formed unit of what would soon become the Office of Strategic Services to discuss the future of American counterpropaganda efforts. The Moon Is Down begun later the same month had its origins in Steinbeck's long-standing desire to contribute to these efforts. Steinbeck submitted a first finished draft of The Moon Is Down originally written as a play called 'The New Order' and set in a mid-sized town in the United States to agency officials; they turned it down concerned that the prospect of an occupied America might lower morale. Early in December Steinbeck began revising the work shifting the setting to a generic northern Europe and recasting the play as a novel; he sent his revised draft to Pascal Covici his editor at Viking later in December. The Moon Is Down as a novel appeared in book form in March 1942. A stage version opened on Broadway on April 9 1942 and was published by Dramatists Play Service in New York later in the same year" Library of America. The Viking Press hardcover books

Publisher's advance copy in wraps Near Fine on account of some bumping to the upper front corner and some light creasing to the spine. With the first issue point of a large period between "talk" and "this" on page 112. Surprisingly scarce in anything approaching this condition. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase with chemise.<br/><br/>An immensely popular war-time novel thinly disguised to garner hope and bolster resistance against the Nazis. "When The Moon is Down appeared in 1942 it ignited some of the most incendiary discourse among prominent literary critics that year" because of its anti-Reich stance and its thinly veiled criticism of American isolationism. SITS. A great debate centered on Steinbeck's depiction of Nazis which some found to humanizing and others saw as overly one-dimensional. "It was not until after the war that it became clear how realistic Steinbeck's portrayal of the occuppied town and its invaders had been" and in 1943 the Chicago Tribune announced that the book had been voted as the year's best fiction. There is a prior owner's book plate on the front paste down and the front hinge area shows some tanning due to a reaction with the glue used in binding. In a very good price clipped dust jacket with shallow chipping to the ends of the spine area and with nicks or small chips over the tips of the boards. 188 pages of text.
