EINAUDI PAPERBACKS 1989 ORDINARI SEGNI DEL TEMPO, VOLUME INTONSO. Il compito che Runciman si è dato con questo lavoro di indubbia utilità pratica e di rilevante portata teorica è la sistemazione generale del metodo delle scienze sociali - antropologia, sociologia e storia. La tesi su cui si fonda la sua argomentazione è che non vi è alcuna vera differenza fra le scienze naturali e le scienze sociali; per le une come per le altre "non c'è via d'uscita... da una concezione della verità come corrispondenza". E, in particolare, per le scienze sociali, "non c'è alcun problema speciale di spiegazione... ma solo un problema speciale di descrizione". Il Trattato, dunque, propone una sistemazione terminologica complessiva che permetta praticamente di distinguere e di caratterizzare il resoconto, la spiegazione, la descrizione e l'interpretazione di cui ogni formulazione teorica è costituita. La verifica delle teorie scientifiche implica così una classificazione in cui sono nomenclati i presupposti indimostrabili, le teorie e i modelli, e ancora i confronti con i dati empirici. E' dunque anche un fondamentale lavoro linguistico, quello di Runciman, che scandaglia le formulazioni degli studiosi ormai classici nei domini dell'antropologia, della sociologia e della storia - da Weber a Durkheim, da Marx a Comte e a Hume, da Braudel a Frazer e Malinowski; senza rinunciare ad indagare fra curiosi esempi di altre fonti narrative e letterarie.
