Jahrhunderts fur die franzosische Konigin Anne de Bretagne tatig war. Hochstes Lob erfuhr der Kunstler in der zeitgenossischen franzosischen Kunstliteratur, wo er in einem Zug mit Jean Fouquet, Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Durer oder Michelangelo genannt wird. Dennoch geriet er in Vergessenheit, und kein einziges heute bekanntes Werk kann sicher mit Poyer verbunden werden. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entdeckte die kunstgeschichtliche Forschung den Kunstler neu, dabei schrieb man seinen Namen durch einen Transkriptionsfehler Poyet ? ein Irrtum, den das vorliegende Buch nach den Quellen korrigiert. Wenig uberzeugend oder unzureichend wurde der Name immer wieder fur verschiedene Einzelwerke in Anspruch genommen. Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre machte die stilkritische Forschung das neu definierte Oeuvre eines Touroner Malers von ausserordentlich hoher Qualitat bekannt und brachte den hochgeruhmten Jean Poyer wieder ins Spiel. Allerdings blieb der Identifikationsvorschlag umstritten, da Poyer fur das letzte Drittel des 15. Jahrhunderts belegt ist, wahrend einzelne fur ihn in Anspruch genommene Werke uber seinen angenommenen Tod hinaus im fruhen 16. Jahrhundert entstanden scheinen. Erst jungste Erkenntnisse lassen Poyer als einen Kunstler hervortreten, der bereits um die Jahrhundertwende revolutionare Neuerungen in die franzosische Malerei einfuhrte. Poyers Oeuvre, das Handschriften, Tafelgemalde, Zeichnungen sowie nach stilverwandten Entwurfen ausgefuhrte Glasfenster umfasst und dessen Kompositionen ebenfalls in die Pariser Druckgraphik Eingang fanden, erfahrt hier erstmals zusammenhangende Betrachtung. Eeuwenlang waren kinder- en volksprenten met voorstellingen van Luilekkerland, Tijl Uilenspiegel, abc's en Sint-Nicolaas niet weg te denken uit de Nederlandse samenleving. Kinderen kregen de prenten als beloning voor goede schoolprestaties. Voor volwassenen waren er katholieke heiligenprenten, levenstrappen en allerlei spotprenten. De prenten werden met simpele middelen gedrukt en eventueel handmatig ingekleurd. Ze waren goedkoop en meestal geen lang leven beschoren. Daardoor zijn ze nu zeer zeldzaam. Aan het eind van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw werden ze geleidelijk verdrongen door prentenboeken en strips. Kinderprenten, volksprenten, centsprenten, schoolprenten is een groots opgezet en omvangrijk naslagwerk waarin alle aspecten van deze prenten aan bod komen: van uitgevers en drukkers, productietechnieken en prijzen tot thematiek, censuur, verspreiding en gebruik. Vorstenportretten, de verkeerde wereld, volksfeesten, kermis en vermaak: het is maar een kleine greep uit de onderwerpen die aan bod komen.
