1830ST12140bParis: Levavasseur 1830. FIRST EDITION. 197 x 127 mm. 7 3/4 x 5". Two volumes.
Appealing rose-colored morocco by Fletcher Battershall stamp-signed on front turn-in with his distinctive bat device covers with mitered frame of double gilt rules topiary cornerpieces raised bands spine compartments framed in gilt with leaf cornerpieces gilt titling turn-ins with gilt rules and leaves at corners top edges gilt. Front pastedowns with large wood-engraved bookplate of the binder. Vicaire I 181. ◆A dozen leaves spotted four of these noticeably so scarcely perceptible uniform fading to spines but IN FINE CONDITION the text otherwise clean bright and fresh and the bindings with lustrous leather glittering gilt and virtually no wear.

This is a pleasing copy of an early work in Balzac's celebrated multi-volume "Comédie Humaine" offered here in excellent amateur bindings by scholar collector connoisseur and binder Fletcher W. Battershall. A lawyer by trade Battershall 1866-1929 was the author of "Book-Binding for Bibliophiles" 1905 and several articles on bookbinding. He was perhaps a pupil of Louis Kinder head binder at the Roycroft Shop as Kinder dedicated his own book "Formulas for Bookbinders" to Battershall in admiration of the latter's "love for and unceasing labors in the study of artistic bookbinding." Generally considered to be the father of social realism Honoré de Balzac 1799-1850 was one of Europe's greatest novelists. His "Comédie Humaine" was a collection of interlinked narratives depicting French society from 1815-48 encompassing the Restoration and the July Monarchy the collection embracing 95 finished and 48 unfinished works. "New World Encyclopedia" tells us that "even in its unfinished state it represents an immense literary endeavor larger in scope and length than possibly any other literary work undertaken in recent history and comparable perhaps only to" William Faulkner's series of novels and stories set in the American South. The present Balzac work was part of what is called the "physiologie genre" a group of books produced in Paris in the 1820s 1830s and early 1840s. According to "Oxford Companion to French Literature" these works comprised "a precious source for the study of the society politics and culture of this period" with "the most notable of these being Brillat-Savarin's 'Physiologie du Goût' 1826 and Balzac's 'Physiologie du Mariage' 1830. . . . Underlying all the Physiologies was the sense that modern city life had become both infinitely interesting and mysterious as well as decidedly ridiculous and bathetic." Balzac was no expert on marriage and his self-help advice here seems to us somewhere beyond unsound. Husbands are advised to keep their wives weak and submissive by discouraging sunshine and physical exercise in favor of lounging and frequent baths. Should the wife continue in ruddy good health leeches might be employed to reduce her to the desired languorous state. Despite the dubious applicability of its text to modern life the book is nevertheless sought after whether attractively bound or not. Levavasseur unknown
1899ST19567-188Paris: A. Roquette 1899. No. 75 OF 125 COPIES on papier vélin. 260 x 160 mm. 10 1/4 x 6 1/4". 3 p.l. i-iv 32 pp. 3 leaves.
VERY ELEGANT GREEN STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO BY MERCIER stamp-signed as "successor to Cuzin" on the front turn-in the covers with a large central filigree lozenge framed in the Romantic style in black and gilt the smooth spine similarly decorated very attractive salmon pink watered silk doublures framed by wide densely gilt dentelles free endpapers covered in the same watered silk all edges gilt. In a rather toned and slightly worn marbled slipcase. WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR BY FRANÇOIS COURBOIN signed by the artist along the lower right and 25 hand-colored prints by Courboin in the text with printed tissue guards. A Large Paper Copy. Carteret V p. 21. Spine uniformly sunned to tan as expected but the binding especially lustrous and entirely unworn; faint offset from the illustration onto the half title but very clean and fresh with immense margins and with almost no signs of use.

A visual delight inside and out this is a bibliophile's copy of Balzac's slice-of-life classic luxuriously illustrated including with an original watercolor and in a beautifully decorated binding. The gently humorous tale here follows a "man of science" as he attempts to make a dinner engagement but gets distracted by the tempting booksellers along the Seine and an argument with a professional rival. The binding is part of an important French tradition: the work of the binder Cuzin who died in 1890 was so well known and so highly esteemed that he was responsible for establishing what was called the "Cuzin style." Devauchelle says that the Cuzin tradition was sustained in its finest form by his celebrated successor Emile Mercier who signed bindings from this period including the present work "Mercier successeur de Cuzin." Beyond the binding the illustrations here provide a second highlight as the engraver librarian and print historian François Courboin 1865-1926 provides a depiction of Paris and its inhabitants in the first quarter of the 19th century. The original watercolor on the half-title depicts the world-weary main character seated in an overstuffed chair in his night cap with slippered feet being served a cup of tea. Both the watercolor and the printed illustrations in the text are done with soft pleasing colors by an extremely careful hand. A. Roquette unknown

Lincoln MacVeagh 1890-1972 a Renaissance man graduated from Harvard magna cum laude in 1913. He went on to study languages at the Sorbonne and became fluent in German French Spanish Latin Greek and Classical Greek. After World War I he became a director of the Henry Holt and Company publishing firm where he became friendly with the poet Robert Frost. In 1923 he left the firm and founded the Dial Press. His name appears on the imprint of many of their publications. In 1933 President Roosevelt appointed him Minister to Greece. He followed presentation of his credentials with a speech in Classical Greek. While in Greece he conducted excavations beneath the Acropolis and made archeological contributions to the National Museum in Athens. He left Greece in 1941 when the German army over ran the country. From there he was appointed the first US Minister to Iceland where he negotiated agreements for the construction of the Keflavik airfield. In late 1942 he became Minister to the Union of South Africa and coordinated American wartime agencies there. In 1943 he was sent to Cairo as Ambassador so that he could assist the governments in exile of Greece and Yugoslavia. He returned to Athens as Ambassador in 1944. MacVeagh gave secret testimony before Congress concerning the Balkans in 1947 testimony that was an important factor in the formation of the Truman Doctrine. In 1948 as Ambassador to Portugal MacVeagh was influential in admitting her into NATO. In 1952 President Truman named him Ambassador to Spain. President Truman wrote to him on March 9 1948: "On the occasion of your appointment as Ambassador to Portugal I would like to make some personal expression of appreciation for the high services you have already rendered your country. During the past fifteen critical years you have served with distinction as Chief of the United states Missions to Iceland the Union of South Africa Yugoslavia and Greece. In this last post especially - as Minister from 1933 to 1941 and as Ambassador since 1943 - your scholarly statesmanship and diplomatic judgment have been of the utmost value."
