1941190624London: Victor Gollancz Ltd 1941. First edition first impression of this vigorous attack on the British Communist Party for their support of the Nazi-Soviet pact and their adherence to Stalin's orders to adopt a neutral attitude towards Nazi Germany. It contains two essays by Orwell "Fascism and Democracy" and "Patriots and Revolutionaries". The left-wing publisher Victor Gollancz who published Orwell's works was relentlessly harried by the British Communist Party for his and his writers' opposition to Stalin and Stalin's alliance with Hitler. The Party's hostility had led to membership in Gollancz's Left Book Club falling from 57000 to 15000 between 1939 and 1942. This volume was put together in response collecting articles that had appeared in the Left News and providing a detailed critique of Communist Party policy between October 1939 and January 1941. It was published in March 1941; with the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in June the Communist Party fully re-orientated to a fervent opposition to Germany. Gollancz meanwhile moved to closer support of the Soviet Union and decided not to publish Animal Farm due to its implicit criticism of Stalin - this was the final Gollancz book with Orwell's work in it. Orwell's two contributions argue respectively that the materialism of the left led them to underestimate the emotional appeal of fascism and that the revolutionary moment possible after Dunkirk was missed and the ruling class had re-asserted themselves. The total print run was 1800 copies; 1300 copies were issued in the present blue cloth for the public with 500 copies issued in red cloth for the Left Book Club. Copies are rarely encountered on the market. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt. Loosely inserted is a pencilled letter from one "Pat" to "Darling Mummy" telling her "you have often said I don't explain my views to you and here they are explained". Spine sunned a little soiling cockling and rubbing to cloth foxing to contents. A very good copy. Fenwick B.5. hardcover

First edition of this samizdat comic book edition in Polish of George Orwell's Animal Farm published by a small underground publishing house in Warsaw. Maciek Bialy and Karol Blue were the pseudonyms of Robert Śnieciński and Fernando Molina. Polish underground publications are scarce outside of Poland.

As of February 2026 KVK and OCLC show six copies in North America. unknown

1946170845London: Socialist Book Centre 1946. First separate edition first impression of this critique of the concept of power worship. Orwell's short essay reflects on Burnham's thesis that technocracy would supplant capitalism - forcefully or otherwise. George Kateb has argued that Orwell's interpretation of Burnham's politics would serve as the "intellectual basis of 1984" p. 572. Notably however Orwell rejects Burnham's contention that the ruling class can effectively redefine reality at will. Orwell's article was originally published the same year as "Second Thoughts on James Burnham" in Polemic 3 a philosophical magazine. Octavo. Original red and white spotted wrappers lettered in black. Light bumping and sunning minor rusting to staples slight toning to contents: a very good copy indeed. Fenwick D.2a. 1933558077New York: Harper & Brothers 1933. Hardcover. Very Good. First American edition. Two very small tears on the edges of two successive leaves very slightly cocked very good or better lacking the dust jacket. A presentable copy of the author's first book. As a young man Orwell took a position in the Indian Imperial Police and was particularly struck by the race and class barriers which prevented him from knowing the Burmese community in which he served. Returning to England in 1927 he attempted to appease his guilt by immersing himself in the life of the poor and outcast of Europe. The resulting experiences became the bases for these thinly fictionalized accounts of his days living and working among the most disenfranchised and downtrodden of Europe's cultural centers. A very scarce title. Harper & Brothers hardcover
