19468520New York: Harcourt Brace & Company. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Just a touch of rubbing to the corners of the dustjacket - see image. Book also has minor touch to two corners - hardley noticeable but worth mentioning. ; Both book and dustjacket are in excellent condition - exceptions noted. Also worth noting is a pencilled inscription by previous owner on inside front cover dated Oct 23rd 1946 - this is easily erased but does give the book provenance. Overall then an extremely presentable copy of this classic "first American edition." ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 118 pages . Harcourt, Brace & Company hardcover

1945355490723490London: Secker and Warburg 1945. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Secker & Warburg May 1945. First UK Edition in first issue dustwrapper priced 6s. to the front flap. Publisher's original green cloth with spine lettered in white. Boards exceptionally bright clean and un-faded apart from a slither of fading to the tip and tail of the spine matching light chipping to the dustwrapper. Overall a lovely near fine copy with no former owner's inscriptions. The dustwrapper is a VG example with a 3 cm tear to the top of the front panel which has been neatly stabilised to the verso by a skilled paper conservationist and a couple of other short closed tears to the top edge. There is minor shallow chipping to the tip and tail of the spine not affecting the lettering and the usual rubbing to the edges of the spine often seen with this title. Unusually the dustwrapper is not printed on the customary Search Searchlight books paper to the verso. However for the avoidance of doubt we can confirm that this dustwrapper and book have clearly been together since the book was published as the miniscule fading to the spine tips matches perfectly the light chipping to the dustwrapper. Secondly the dustwrapper is definitely NOT from a Second Edition as there is no mention of Second Edition to the front flap and there is no tell-tale erasure had it been there in the first place. What differentiates this copy is how clean the back cover is. Rest assured there has been no restoration to the miniscule chips to the dustwrapper which is as natural as you would hope to find. The first edition of Animal Farm 4500 copies was delayed from May to August 1945 and was an immediate success. One of the most important books of the last century and widely perceived as George Orwells masterpiece allegory of Soviet totalitarianism. Photographs/scans available upon request. 1947144748Munich: Vidavnitstvi Prometei 1947. Octavo. Original printed wrappers. Minor soiling. Half title. Single portrait. Text block printed on poor paper but this example is quite clean and crisp overall. An excellent copy. This is the first Ukrainian edition of Orwell's classic anti Russian Anti Stalinist satirical allegorical novella. It was first published in August 17 1945 in London. Quite simply the plot revolves around the farm animals rising up against the farmer and trying to create a just and equal society. Orwell was very much influenced by the events in Stalinist Russia and he wrote the book in 1943/44. In 1946 Ivan Shevchenko wrote to Orwell asking him for his approval to publish a Ukrainian translation of the book. The translation was verbally done as the book was read aloud to Ukrainian Displaced Persons DP's who were amazed at the contents. The book was an immediate hit with the Ukrainian people but others were not too sure. Many copies were seized by the Americans and turned over to the Soviets who destroyed them. I am sure the DP's cherished the book and helped to see that copies were saved. The book has become quite rare due to the censorship and the poor production material. This particular copy belonged to a DP that emigrated to Canada after the war. They must have treasured it immensely. 1947 Vidavnitstvi Prometei unknown
