1950757R41London: Secker & Warburg 1950. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Fair. 7.5" by 5.5". None. An uncommon fourth impression of this important and thought-provoking work with the original dust wrapper preserved. George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair 1903-1950 an English novelist essayist and critic. His works were often social commentaries arguing against totalitarianism in support of democratic socialism. The adjective 'Orwellian' describes totalitarian and authoritarian social practices and many of his neologisms such as 'Big Brother' and 'Thought Police' are in common use in the English language. This work is Orwell's final work and is a dystopian science fiction novel first published by Secker & Warburg in 1949. Its events follow Winston Smith as he dreams of rebellion in an imagined version of the year 1984 in which government surveillance and propaganda are rife during ongoing war. This is a fourth impression of the first edition complete with the dust wrapper preserved. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart a touch of fading to the spine otherwise minor shelf wear only. Dust wrapper is in two pieces with two inches of the spine remaining; the covers are a trifle rubbed with a tear to the rear cover but flaps are in very good condition. Pencil ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed Secker & Warburg hardcover

194988110London: Secker & Warburg 1949. First edition. Hardcover. Jacket design by Michael Kennard. 1949 First edition first impression. 8vo. Original cloth. Green dust-jacket priced 10s. A wonderful example of the first edition of Orwell's dystopian classic benefiting from some skilful minor restoration to remove a sticker mark from the jacket spine and improving the corners. Although many worthy experts suggest that the red jacket has historically proved to be the scarcer it is our experience that the green one has proved equally difficult to acquire in recent years - worth noting that of ten jacketed first editions that appeared at auction in 2025 eight were in the red jacket. Bookplate to front pastedown and ink name to front free endpaper; jacket with expert restoration to corners and central section of spine resulting in an excellent example. Very good Secker & Warburg hardcover

24183London: Secker and Warburg. 1949. First edition first printing. First edition first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with red titles to the spine in the maroon Michael Kennard designed dustwrapper. Top edge purple. An excellent near fine copy the binding square and firm the cloth bright and fresh with a little fading to the extreme edges. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. The text block edge is a little toned with a few spots of foxing to the top edge the purple however remains vivid and without fading. Complete with the very good rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that has a couple of small chips with associated creasing to the upper tip of the habitually faded spine. The present example in entirely original condition does retain some of its red colour to the spine panel rendering the white titles still legible and is therefore uncommon thus. Not price-clipped 10s net to the lower front flap. Housed in a bespoke grey and black quarter morocco solander case. The first printing of Nineteen Eighty-Four was published on 8th June 1949 in an edition of 25000 copies. The book was issued in two colours of dustwrapper identical in all but the background colour of the upper panel and spine one being green the other maroon. Although no precedence has been established the maroon would appear to be the less common of the two and is considered the more desirable. Fenwick A12a; Connolly 100. 1984168588Weston Massachusetts: M&S Press 1984. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength First edition one of 275 deluxe copies from a total edition of 330 copies specially bound by the Grey Parrot bindery. This privately printed edition presents all that survives of the preliminary draft versions of Nineteen Eight-Four a manuscript described by Sonia Orwell as "the only MS of any of George's books in existence". Orwell's classic work of dystopian fiction was begun in 1946 and composed in four stages. The extant manuscript provides the narrative of Nineteen Eighty-Four in outline from the beginning almost to the conclusion with some gaps. As noted by Peter Davison in his introduction "Despite all the rewriting revealed by this facsimile it is remarkable how closely what has survived adheres to the main sweep of the narrative of Nineteen Eighty-Four. All the principal features except the Appendix on Newspeak are present suggesting that the story had been pretty fully formed in Orwell's mind by the time he sat down to write it". In 1952 Sonia Orwell contributed "the original manuscript of Orwell's last novel partly in typescript but mainly in his own manuscript" to a charity auction at Christie's. It sold to Scribner's of New York who then arranged a sale to a collector in Kansas. Scribner's again handled the manuscript in 1969 when it was sold to Daniel G. Siegel. It is now at Brown University Library. Totalling 330 copies this edition includes two issues: 275 copies with morocco-backed marbled boards and 55 "special copies". The volume comprises a preface by Daniel G. Siegel an introduction by Davison 190 colour facsimile illustrations and a full transcript of Orwell's manuscript. Folio. 190 colour facsimile illustrations. Original blue morocco-backed marbled boards by Grey Parrot Easthampton spine lettered in gilt light grey endpapers. Housed in original grey cloth slipcase. Fine condition. Presented in original numbered cardboard carton. hardcover
