Externally sound with slight discoloration to the cloth extremities and spine with an ink inscription to the front. Light fraying to the cloth extremities. Small marks including one or two light tide marks. Scattered spotting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spotting predominantly to the first and last few pages. The book was issued to members of Victor Gollancz's Left Book Club as the choice for March 1937 ensuring a large edition. Although Gollancz commissioned Orwell's study the latter half of the book - in which Orwell condemns British socialist intellectuals and their adherence to the Soviet Union - dismayed Gollancz and the Left Book Club committee. Gollancz published the book in its entirety but with his own preface taking issue with many of Orwell's claims. Octavo 211 x 133. With 16 half-tone photographic plates.
