So authentic looking were the stamps that five years after they were issued many philatelists believed them to be have been produced during the Second World as either a German propaganda device or to quote the Stamp Magazine for a more sinister purpose. Edward Milward-Oliver: "Len Deighton: An Annotated Bibliography 1954-1985". The GPO took a very dim view of these at the time and most of them were recalled and destroyed.
