1963355490720761London: Cape 1963. First Edition. UNCORRECTED PROOF of the First UK Edition. A softcover. Usual Cape pale green wrappers with Cape logos. Minor surface loss in places to the spine and a couple of faint creases to the bottom left hand corner of the rear cover. Overall VG indeed. I do not believe that this proof was issued with a proof dust wrapper. NB: a note on Cape proofs of this title. There are 3 Cape proofs noted with no priority established and I am indebted to Jon Gilbert the noted Deighton specialist at Adrian Harrington for bringing this to my attention. This is an example of the rarest of the three known proofs. The Lettering to the front cover of the Action Cook Book proof is in SERIPH type-face and below the Author's name there are additional words: Designed by Paul Peter Piech F.S.T.D. First Edition. a book of 1941 United Kingdom postage stamps in three denominations 6 at 2 1/2d 6 at 2d and 6 at 1/2d each bearing the head of Adolf Hitler designed to look like a contemporary George VI booklet. So authentic looking were the stamps that five years after they were issued many philatelists believed them to be have been produced during the Second World as either a German propaganda device or to quote the Stamp Magazine for a more sinister purpose. Edward Milward-Oliver: "Len Deighton: An Annotated Bibliography 1954-1985". The GPO took a very dim view of these at the time and most of them were recalled and destroyed. They are therefore very scarce. Cape

Basis for the classic 1965 film starring Michael Caine as 'Harry Palmer' directed by Sidney J Furie and produced by Harry Saltzman who made the early Bond movies; mention of the film 'From Russia With Love' appears on the dustwrapper flap as does a quote from Queen magazine claiming Deighton's hero was "James Bond's most serious rival". One of a small number of promotional copies with a wraparound band featuring a photograph of 007 creator Ian Fleming and Len Deighton in conversation; Ian Fleming was a fan and had chosen Deighton's 1962 novel The Ipcress File as his 'thriller of the year'. Signed copies with these attributes are decidedly uncommon. Provenance: Purchased from the collection of Jon Gilbert - Ian Fleming Bibliographer - and notable Len Deighton specialist.
