1687673L6London: Not Stated 1687. First edition. Paperback. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this very scarce satire on John Dryden written contemporaneously to his success. Scarce - last seen at auction in 1981. Pages 12 20 are misnumbered as called for. ESTC no: R36782 WING: R1206 Collated complete with the final blank. With the signatures A4 B2 C-E4. This work is a satire on John Dryden with extracts from his poems. The title references his allegorical poem 'The Hind and the Panther' which is regarded as one of his most controversial. Dryden had converted to Catholicism around the same time as the Catholic monarch James II's accession to the throne in 1685. Many Protestant writers were disgusted by this particularly as previous poems by Dryden included praise towards Puritan Protectorate Oliver Cromwell. Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' came from Dryden's conversion and he describes the different religious denominations as animals making clear his new stance as a Catholic. This 'Trage-Comedy' is a response to Dryden's 'The Hind and the Panther' and his revolt against his previous beliefs. The introduction provides a synopsis of Dryden's poem and states that for writing it Dryden deserves to be 'reckon'd in the number of the Heathen Gods'. A very scarce work which provides context to the political and social climate of the seventeenth century. Disbound as called for. Externally smart with just a few light spots to the front and rear wraps. Internally firmly bound. To A2 there is a small ring mark at the bottom of the page not affecting the text. 167566A VERY INTRIGUING LITTLE BOOK OF THE UTMOST RARITY

FIRST and ONLY edition. 12mo 96 pp. title within a charming woodcut border. Several headpieces. Contemporary calf with gilt decorations to spine skilfully restored. An excellent copy.

This anonymous collection of heroical amorous and frivolous poems is a mystery. It has no imprint information so no place no name nor date stated. The title-page tells us just "printed in that year" which seems a joke. The only bibliographical work mentioning it is Lachèvre's Bibliographie des recueils collectifs de poésies publiés de 1597 a 1700 Paris 1905 in the Supplement Vol. 4 p. 22 Letter N. Not even Lachèvre managed to see this work in person as he stated in his comment to the work: "Nous n'avons pas été assez heureux pour mettre la main sur ce petit volume.". Lachèvre suggested that the book might have been published "vers 1675".

The book is mentioned also in the third part of Bibliotheca Hohendorfiana no. 1961 p. 149 the catalogue of the private library of Baron Georg Wilhelm von Hohendorf La Haye 1720.

Only two copies seem to be available in public libraries around the world: at the BNF of Paris "Ex. libr. de Thomas Westwod. 1670601L7London: E Okes for William Whitwood 1670. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this scarce tract on Ralph Wallis a nonconformist pamphleteer known as 'the Cobler of Gloucester'. This tract appeared following the death of Wallis and focuses on Wallis' ideas and his pamphleteering. Wallis' biographer states to this work that 'His complexion was of a sunburnt gipsy colour and his skin was rough and tawny like singed bacon; his hair was brown and bristly upon his head but his locks were weather-turned like a barber's show periwig'. Despite his Nonconformist views Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Wallis was apprehended by the government following his dispersion of pamphlets and he was held in custody. He admitted authorship of the works but declared to be in religion 'a Christian' and so was released. His pamphlets were frequently of a scatological tone and featured entertaining anecdotes regarding clergymen whose names and addresses he knew. DNB This work is the ESTC no. R20134. Later spotted full calf blind double fillets to boards titles gilt to spine all edges speckled red. An early English account of Morocco by an anonymous pamphleteer sometimes called 'Robert Cottingham'. This volume gives an account of the privateer and adventurer Sir Anthony Sherley's 1565-1636 ambassadorships from Rudolf II Holy Roman Emperor to Mowlai Abd-el-Aziz son of Ahmed II Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. These accounts were made famous in Samuel Purchas's influential 'Purchas his Pilgrimmes' 1614 which is a rather more robust volume. Sherley was a remarkably well travelled Elizabethan gentleman beginning his career as a captain in Robert Dudley's forces before becoming a knight of Henri IV and then launching military expeditions to West Africa Sao Tome and Jamaica. Sherley journeyed to Persia where he became the representative of the Shah in Moscow Prague and Rome. Effectively exiled from his own country Sherley went to Prague where he became emissary of the Holy Roman Emperor to Morocco. He would later became an admiral of the Spanish fleet in the Levant. He died in 1635 penniless and obscure. This pamphlet presents Sherley's experiences in Morocco as well as accounts from other travellers like him as it would have appeared to the English reading public for the first time. Dibdin notes this Bible as 'the most magnificent' of the Oxford Bibles. A handsome edition with this set bound in a binding with George III's monogram to the boards.
