Smedley 'Frank Fairlegh' profusely illustrated throughout. First Edition. With thirty illustrations by George Cruikshank. George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator best known for his illustrations in the novels of Charles Dickens. Francis Edward Smedley began his literary career by contributing to Sharpe's London Magazine anonymously. His contributions were well received and would lead to Smedley's development of 'Frank Fairlegh'. In a half morocco binding. Externally sound with bumping and rubbing. Front joint and hinge failed with board detached but present. Ink inscription to front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Denys Auguste Affre, archevêque de Paris, pensait que sa présence pourrait contribuer à ramener la paix sur les barricades en 1848. Il avait commencé à prendre la parole lorsque les coups de feu reprirent et qu'il fut touché par une balle perdue. Il mourut le lendemain. La BnF possède le seul exemplaire que nous ayons pu trouver, sous la référence ark:/12148/cb38793121h.

Il s'agit principalement de figures incomplètes présentées en deux versions, destinées à être copiées ou complétées par les élèves (celles-ci n'ont pas été complétées et sont donc dans leur état d'impression d'origine). Quelques illustrations plus complexes et complétées figurent à la fin du livre. Reliure en papier souple avec un motif rouge et bleu et du texte sur la couverture. Pas de pages de titre séparées. Les couvertures sont en bon état, globalement propres, avec juste quelques traces d'usure. L'intérieur est propre, bien qu'un peu jauni. 14,5 cm x 23,5 cm. Nous n'avons pas réussi à trouver d'exemplaire de cet ouvrage sur WorldCat, bien que des livres de dessin et d'art assez similaires de Monrocq aient été publiés à cette époque. Aucun exemplaire en vente au moment du catalogage.
