An extremely scarce account of the great landslip of Christmas Day 1839 on the East Devon coastline which created what is now known as 'the undercliff'. An extremely scarce work with no other copy seen in commerce. The only institutional copy is held at the British library.The great landslip saw fifty acres of land breaking away from the cliffs and crash onto the beach. There were reports of fire and the sulphuric fumes led people to believe there had been an earthquake or volcanic eruption. The chasm left from the landslip was over three quarters of a mile long and presented new cliff faces over 150 feet high. The landslip piqued the interest of scientists worldwide and Queen Victoria travelled to the site in the yacht. The author of this work quotes from a friend residing in the vicinity of Axmouth who describes the events leading up to the creation of a 'monstrous ravine' calling the incident 'the remarkable visitation of the Most High God of this land by an earthquake'. Following the disastrous event a dance called 'the Landslips Quadrille' was sold in London and engravings of the scene were made. This is a contemporary account of the event which was preached to be a warning from God. A fascinating contemporary account of this disaster. In paper wraps. 183988235London UK: Henry Smith 44 Drury Lane 1839-1840. First Thus. 12mo. 14.5cm. Disbound retaining buff rear wrap stitched possibly at some point removed from a sammelband. 36pp. Clean and bright with a 1" closed tear to the lower spine edge of the title page; internally fresh lacking the frontispiece plate depicting "The Marquis and His Molls at The Union and Mother Emerson's". A very good clean copy indeed of a vanishingly scarce publication. <br /> <br /> Published under two identifiable imprints; one by "John Wilson" of Long Acre actually the rather shady Edward Duncombe and this volume by "Henry Smith" who was actually notorious smut peddler William Dugdale. Wilson's imprint is the one from the Madeline Kripke Collection currently residing at the Lilly Library in Bloomington Indiana and was long thought to be the only surviving copy. Another copy of the Wilson/Duncombe surfaced in trade in a catalog from the luminous and erudite Karen Thomson in the mid 20-teens and presumably disappeared into a private collection. This copy is the only traceable copy of the Henry Smith imprint with no visibility in OCLC at all. <br /> <br /> Precedence is undeniably difficult to establish; Dugdale was trading at 94 Drury Lane in 1837-1838 and was next door or more likely downstairs at 94 ½ Drury Lane in late 1839 after a brief few months over on Wych Street. He was verifiably printing and publishing work under the "Henry Smith" shingle in 1838 and was presumably still using it in 1839 but in 1840 he was over on Holywell St. off The Strand. <br /> Duncombe on the other hand can be placed at 78 Long Acre having taken a rental on a shop in what was most likely late 1839 it is recorded that in 1841 he hung the name "John Wilson" over the door apparently to the surprise of his landlord who testified in court that there was no such person at that address although there is scant evidence to suggest he wasn't publishing under Wilson prior to that. Purely for amusement purposes it should be noted that during the time this work was printed neither of these two piratical gentlemen was further than 4 minutes walk from each other. <br /> Ms. Kripke stuck to a date of 1840 for her "Wilson" copy and a date of 1840 can be applied to the Smith imprint via a periodical advertisement discovered by the publisher of "The Penny Bibliography"; Mr. John Adcock https://john-adcock.blogspot.com/2009/03/penny-bibliography.html. <br /> The fact that it bears the 94 Drury Lane address suggests a printing date of late 1839 although seeing as both Dugdale and Duncombe were perpetually in and out of court and jail for various crimes against decency throughout their entire careers any accuracy in the timeline can be ascribed to accident rather than intention.<br /> <br /> This copy rather sadly lacks the frontispiece which presumably would have looked much like the one Duncombe/Wilson used in his publication although his has a rather proprietorial publisher's imprint across it depicting a virile young rake cavorting through a number of the establishments mentioned within. <br /> <br /> A significant link in a long chain of bawdy guides rake's progressions and "Gentlemen's Kalendars" that owes much to Harris's Lists of half a century earlier; "Larks of London" occupies a clearly rather cramped space alongside "The Swell's Night Guide Through The Metropolis" by "F.L.G." and the "Man of Pleasure's Illustrated Pocket Book" and their ilk. Stopping short of active descriptions of sexual acts but making no bones about their availability and the addresses where they could or should be purchased it also expands into discussions of the relative quality of food drink and gaming facilities whether the company can be construed to be "Low" or of a more elevated nature and a certain strategic interest in how to get the very best from a night on the most irredeemably vice-ridden town in the Empire. Without the Founders' portraits which are not called for in the plate list and which Tooley notes were 'not issued till a later date' so the book is complete without these. Some off-setting of plates to adjacent text leaves but not affecting legibility. More than a dozen plates carry the watermark of WHATMAN 1812 and most plates are uncut ie not trimmed thus with slight narrow edge tanning. Ex Library with circular blind stamps 1.6cm throughout. The verso of both titlepages have 3x4mm stamp with accession & shelf number and "enf.trans.4/70" filled in neatly. It does not show through to recto of leaf and there is now a gift book plate tipped over this. The pastedown has bookplate of F.W. Searle initials & 1" red ink circle. Newer free endpaper watermarked 1833 and is not part of the pastedown or next free sheet. 18300046431830. Full Straight-Grained Morocco. Very Good. An exquisite manuscript copy of plates from the 1644 work by Wencelaus Hollar. While a copy the pen-and-ink work here is absolutely exceptional requiring a loupe or magnifying glass to fully appreciate the niceties of detailing achieved by the artist copier. It is also clear that this copier did not merely trace the original work. Heightening the pen-and-ink work are touches of watercolor. 8vo. 173 by 117 mm. Unpaginated half-title page with a handwritten copy of the verse from "The Merchant of Venice entitled "The Folly of Fashion the Deceit of Ornament or Appearance" second title copied from the 1644 work followed by 36 mounted pen and ink copies of fashion etchings from the 1644 work and a final page with a drawing of a trophy and two musings written out. The drawings besides being meticulous with near-microscopic detail are austere with the pen and ink work heightened with only touches of flesh color for the women's faces and tiny dabs of gold for jewelry buttons and the like. The austerity we would stress is befitting the fashions represented as the early and mid-17th century was a time that garments tended to be more monochromatic and sober meant to suggest piety as any student of portraits from this era coincident with the Puritan Revolution and religious wars on the continent would have absorbed. And we would add the austerity is not just of the dress but also the expression on the women depicted here. The flesh color applied to the faces and also hands is just as nuanced as everything else about these portraits. There is a gradient of coloration capturing very realistically the actual pigment of human flesh. The one exception to the limited color usage is a depiction of a woman from Virginia a Native American whose bare garment is painted red and who is wearing jewelry that is captured with bolder applications of gold. This exotic specimen also shows a woman with a tattoo on her arms something that was completely alien from European cultures at the time. The Virginian is not the only non-European depicted however as there is a woman from Algiers a Moresco woman an Argentinian. Also shown is a Turkish woman and the dress shown is from different strata of the societies represented. Short cursive handwritten captions identify for us where the model is from. All the handwriting including on the title the poem etc. is rendered in a tight minute script. Unfortunately there is no indication who the artist copyist was other than the initials PC by several of the drawings. In the front there is an ownership inscription of an Elizabeth Cobbett. There is a watercolored bookplate with the Hillman family crest. unknown

The images include a group picture of the 21st Lancers two of whom received the Victoria Cross for actions at the Battle of Omdurman. There are also images of British soldiers in Khartoum Guards at Shabluka and military railway construction. The Sudan Military Railroad was constructed from 1896-1897 by Kitchener to supply the Anglo-Egyptian army prosecuting the Mahdist War. This railway was the predecessor line for the present-day Sudan Railway. The Kitchener campaign was from 1896-1898. And was a reconquest of territory lost by the Khedives of Egypt in 1884 and 1885 during the Mahdist War. The plates are in a relatively good condition with some tape repairs to the edges of some. Housed in a wooden box. These images are an original source from this historical campaign. In a wooden box. All but one of the plates are paper taped at the edges. A scarce copy of this first edition of the collected edition of the penny dreadful 'The Terrific Register' a crime magazine enjoyed by Charles Dickens. A very scarce work. The first edition of this sensational periodical. Incomplete being pages 417 to 820 of Volume I labelled part II to the spine and the complete text of Volume II. The title page for volume I has been bound to the start of volume II. Issues 27-51 to the first volume and issues 53-104 to volume II. The final leaf of volume I reads 'end of vol I' and the first issue of volume II starts at page 1. 'The Terrific Register' was a weekly penny dreadful published from 1823 to 1825 sold for a penny each containing sensational and melodramatic stories that gave accounts of murder brutal executions torture incest ghosts cannibalism and more. The magazine was enjoyed by Charles Dickens during his teenage years a fact which doesn't come as a surprise due to his later novels. He said that the stories used to 'frighten the wits out of his head'. The 'Register' came about due to the thriving production of cheap reading materials for the working classes. Illustrated with in-text engravings throughout. Bookplate to the front pastedown of Volume I 'Sir Richard Burton'. With the motto 'Vigilans' to the bookplate. This bookplate has been identified as being that of Sir Richard Burton 1755-1855 of Sacketts Hill House Isle of Thanet Kent. A very scarce and influential penny magazine. Volume I is in a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper and volume II is in a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. Rubbing with some loss to the head and tail of spine to volume I. The hinges to Volume I are tender. Bookplate to the front pastedown of Volume I 'Sir Richard Burton'. Internally volume II is firmly bound. The last couple of pages of Volume I are working loose. Pages are bright with the odd spot a little heavier to Volume I. "Visit to a Farm-House" is a second edition also dated 1805. "The Benevolent Widow" is a third edition. "Prince Lee Boo" is undated and page 31/32 is clipped. "Hamlain" is not a first as it is dated 1804 and I believe the work was published in 1799. It may however be a first Irish printing as it was done in Dublin. Rubbing to spine and board edges. Internally clean. Bookplate to the front pastedown of Manoug Parikian British concert violinist and professor at the Royal Academy of Music London. Loosely inserted are three TLS by Isaiah Berlin dated 1972-73 on 'Headington House Oxford' letterhead in which he thanks Parikian for the loan of the book and then apologises for not returning it in a timely manner as the book had become buried somewhere in his library. The author Wilhelm von Lenz was born in Riga and studied with Liszt and Chopin in Paris. He is best known for his research on Beethoven. 18855333Edinburgh: N.P. 1885. First edition. A lovely album sized 28cm x 37cm. Most of the albumen photographs are sized 21cm x 27cm. Sadly the album has no ownership details but the first photograph is of a British ship This is HMS Malabar a Euphrates-class troopship which appears in several of the photographs so we assume that our traveller was aboard this vessel. Next is a fabulous photograph of what seems to be a theatre troupe perhaps for a fancy dress event on the cruiser as the outfits seem to bear little connection to each other. Sadly there is nothing to identify the participants. Then follows a large photograph of Aden in the Yemen and one of the Suez Canal from Suez itself. The following three photographs are of Port Said at the other end of the canal. Then follow Sixteen photographs of Cairo and district including the pyramids mosques and including several photographs by Félix Bonfils and H Arnoux. Two of the photographs have a small area of loss where the photos have stuck together in the album but with fairly minor loss. Included in these are a lovely photographs of date sellers and a praying man both studio photographs by Zangaki Brothers Janos and Adelphoi and a group of camels about to set off. We return to the Suez canal for the next photograph where the Malabar is photographed by the Zangaki brothers. This image was lately used in the Larousse dictionary with two more photgraphs of the Malabar on the canal. Photographed by the Zangaki brothers. These 26 photographs make up the "Middle Eastern" portion of the album. The next photograph is of the harbour at Malta and there are a total of nine large photographs of Malta. As an interlude is a curious photograph of a cartoon / caricature of a boat being pulled and labelled "The Nile 1884-5." Next we find a lovely photograph of the Rock of Gibraltar from the Spanish coast and two further photographs of Gibraltar landmarks. The next stop on our journey is Norway where there are seven photographs of Christiania Oslo. There is a final Norwegian photograph which is a hand coloured photograph of young women in traditional Norwegian costume. Finally the traveller returns to the United Kingdom and arrives at the Forth Bridge and Edinburgh with two beautiful large sized photographs. Finally are seven smaller but still very respectable albumen photographs of Edinburgh landmarks. These each are 13cm x 21cm. So in total we offer an album of 50 pages containing a total of 56 albumen photographs 49 large format and seven slightly smaller. . Première édition. Un bel album au format 28 cm x 37 cm. Nous supposons donc que notre voyageur se trouvait à bord de ce navire. Vient ensuite une fabuleuse photographie de ce qui semble être une troupe de théâtre peut-être pour un bal costumé organisé sur le croiseur car les tenues semblent n'avoir que peu de rapport les unes avec les autres. Malheureusement rien ne permet d'identifier les participants. Suit ensuite une grande photographie d'Aden au Yémen puis une autre du canal de Suez prise depuis Suez même. Les trois photographies suivantes représentent Port-Saïd à l'autre extrémité du canal. Viennent ensuite seize photographies du Caire et de ses environs notamment les pyramides et les mosquées dont plusieurs prises par Félix Bonfils et H. Arnoux. Deux des photographies présentent une petite zone endommagée où les photos se sont collées dans l'album mais les dégâts sont relativement mineurs. Parmi celles-ci on trouve de jolies photos de vendeurs de dattes et d'un homme en prière toutes deux prises en studio par les frères Zangaki Janos et Adelphoi et d'un groupe de chameaux sur le point de partir. Nous retournons au canal de Suez pour la photo suivante où le Malabar est photographié par les frères Zangaki. Cette image a récemment été utilisée dans le dictionnaire Larousse avec deux autres photos du Malabar sur le canal. Photographié par les frères Zangaki. Ces 26 photographies constituent la partie "Moyen-Orient" de l'album. La photographie suivante représente le port de Malte et il y a au total neuf grandes photographies de Malte. En guise d'intermède on trouve une curieuse photographie d'un dessin animé / caricature d'un bateau tiré intitulée "Le Nil 1884-5". Nous trouvons ensuite une jolie photographie du rocher de Gibraltar depuis la côte espagnole et deux autres photographies de monuments de Gibraltar. La prochaine étape de notre voyage est la Norvège où se trouvent sept photographies de Christiania Oslo. La dernière photographie norvégienne est une photographie colorée à la main représentant des jeunes femmes en costume traditionnel norvégien. Enfin le voyageur revient au Royaume-Uni et arrive au pont du Forth et à Édimbourg avec deux magnifiques photographies grand format. Pour finir sept photographies albumines plus petites mais tout de même très respectables représentent des monuments d'Édimbourg. Elles mesurent chacune 13 cm x 21 cm.
