William Denny' the spine in compartments with contrasting leather title piece lettered in gilt and with 'The Wm. Denny Library' stamped in gilt at the foot; marbled edges; front pastedown with bookseller's ticket of 'W. Beal Tinsmith and Bookseller Wellesley-street East Auckland'; pastedown and front free-endpaper with ownership inscriptions of 'T. Kane Decr 1870' and 'F. Cherry Newton Auckland 339-1871' pp 192; 192; rear pastedown with Cherry's manuscript date of 5.12.71 and the remnants of the binder's ticket printed in red on white but of which only the following letters can be discerned: 'ART / BOOKBINDER / LEY'; the boards are lightly rubbed and with some minor scuff marks but the gilt is still bright; the binding is firm and the contents clean. The cargo and passenger ship SS William Denny was wrecked off New Zealand's North Cape in March 1857 on a voyage from Auckland to Sydney. This beautiful little volume in the ship's own attractive binding frustratingly we cannot identify the binder from his only partially legible ticket was evidently salvaged from the wreck at the time; whether or not it is a unique survivor is not known. The book was later sold by William Beal Auckland tinsmith ! and bookseller to Mr. T. Kane before passing a year later into the private collection of another Aucklander F. Cherry of Newton as the 339th volume in his library. hardcover

19001627Original manuscript. c.1900. Quarto red cloth album with bevelled edges 25.5 x 19.5cm containing 28 fine black chalk drawings on thin tracing paper depicting various ancient Persian and other Middle Eastern rulers mounted at the corners to the leaves. Each sheet approximately 18 x 15cm. Seven images with red manuscript titles in Cyrillic beneath. Armorial crest in red ink and small old bookseller's printed description affixed to the front pastedown. Old pencil note to the front free endpaper stating "Tracings from the tombs". The album itself is significantly worn and lacking the spine the upper board held by the cords only and with the first five leaves loose and other leaves becoming so. The leaves with light foxing and marking and occasional nicks to the extremities. Possibly lacking one drawing at the beginning. The first drawing is detached and has creasing to the corners affecting the image at one corner several other drawings are detached at one or two corners but still remaining mounted to the leaves with minor loss to the blank corners and with a little wrinkling to the extremities otherwise the images are in good order. An intriguing album of finely-executed black chalk drawings depicting twenty-eight rulers from Persia the Middle East and Mediterranean with named individuals including: "Rut-n-nu"of Egypt; "Dikran II" Tigranes the Great 140-55 BC King of Armenia; Amastris c.340-39-284 BC Persian princess and ruler of Heraclea the first woman in the Mediterranean publicly identified as the political economic and administrative royal authority; Nicocles King of Paphos d. 306 BC; "Turan Khan"; Mithridates; and "Sheikh al Arab".

According to the early twentieth-century bookseller's note affixed to the front pastedown the drawings are "tomb tracings" of Persian and Egyptian portraits. The first image titled "Rut-n-nu" depicting a portrait from an Egyptian temple which was also reproduced by the French Egyptologist Jean-François Champollion in his "Monuments de l'Egypte de la Nubie" 1835-45 certainly appears to indicate this. However the remaining drawings all very much in the Persian manner and uniform in their style and execution and of which we can find no other examples/copies puts a question mark over this apparent origin.

Provenance: from the library of Dr. Hugh J. 1688655L26London: Randall Taylor; Henry Hills 1688. First edition. Disbound. Good. 8.5" by 6.5". None. Two politically fuelled pamphlets regarding the fallout following James II's Penal Laws. These pamphlets directly relate to the Seven Bishops' petition. The Seven Bishops were members of the Church of England who were tried and acquitted for seditious libel. The bishops include William Sancroft the Archbishop of Canterbury. The seven men opposed James II's 'Declaration of Indulgence' which was supposedly a step towards establishing religious freedom in the British Isles. Many suspected that it was to suit the Catholic King's own agenda. The first pamphlet to this set regards the petition and is stated as being written by 'A true member of the Church of England.' There were two versions of this work published in the same year an eight page edition and an eleven. This is the eleven page edition. This work addressed to the Archbishop of Canterbury and the other six men tells them that they are disrespecting the King by protesting his divine right. The individual discusses the Act in detail and the author tells the Bishops that they have 'divided yourselves from a loyal judicious and religious part of the church you profess yourselves members of'. ESTC Reference R4980. The second work to this set is 'an Answer to a Paper Importing a Petition of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Six Other Bishops to His Majesty' which has been attributed to Henry Care. Care was a Whig propagandist who wrote many anti-Catholic works. It is believed that he founded 'The English Liberties'. ESTC R35842. Both pamphlets collated complete. Two contemporary sources regarding the religious and political problems during the seventeenth century and an interesting insight into contemporary opinion regarding the Seven Bishops. It was this event that contributed heavily to the anti-Catholic riots of 1688 and the Glorious Revolution. Disbound as is usually called for. Externally sound with minor chips to the extremities. Large loss to the front wrap of 'An Address'. Prior owner's inscriptions to the top corner of all leaves as pagination from when they were originally bound. Internally both pamphlets are generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with the odd handling marks and spots. Good Randall Taylor; Henry Hills unknown
