1789004352<p>My book plate on front free end paper and armorial book plate of Rev John Dunn Yarker on front paste-down. 3 front free end papers and 3 rear free end papers one of which has been pasted to the last page. One page of errata bound in. Skiver on spine with gold title slightly tarnished; gold crenellations around all edges largely intact; head and tail of spine have been rubbed; hand-made rag paper un-foxed but last four sheets have a brown stain 30mm long and max 4mm wide along the upper edges; somewhat yellowed on all edges. 323 pages large type. There are XXVI letters the first dated Aug 2 1788 and the last Sept 3 1788. On Sept 2 he wrote: So much peturbation and heat will not eafily fubfide; and it will be found a matter extremely difficult if practicable to reduce their minds as before to the yoke of fubjection In fact the whole kingdom feems ripe for a Revolution . Bear in mind Bastille day was under a year later - July 14 1789. Hard Cover Parchment. Coverd in PVC plastic. This book apparently followed a companion volume on the Netherlands. At least 7 other publishers have offered this book some still in print proving that many people would choose a hard copy. The book is a classic of Historic interest. This English printing might be the true first. I do not know if there was an American edition in the same year. VERY rare in this edition. Feel free to make a reasonable offer. </p> T. 19502436Bruxelles: Isy Brachot Fils 1950. Beautiful copy of this numbered limited comic approach to the French Penal Code. This is one of only 50 copies which are on papier annam de Rives. The book comes with a full suite of the illustrations in colour and a second suite in black and white. This should also come with an original watercolour - but this is not present. Orange / red slipcase with a little rubbing but no major damage. cream faux vellum folder containing the soft covered book and 2 suites. The wrapper of the book is covered in glassine. There is a small hole in the glassine presumably where a sticker has been removed. Otherwise immaculate. The text itself is loose in gathers with Dratz's colour illustrations throughout. 243 iii pp. 270 by 235mm 10¾ by 9¼ inches. Hand coloured engraving showing a rural scene near London with fashionably dressed gentlemen riding the newly invented 'hobby horse'.<br /> The forerunner of the bicycle the 'hobby' or 'dandy horse' was invented by the German Baron Karl von Drais in France in 1817. It was introduced to England the following year by Denis Johnson a coachmaker of Long Acre London who described it as a 'Pedestrian Curricle'. Hobby horses had no pedals or brakes but were propelled by the rider pushing on the ground with his feet and dragging the feet to slow the machine. Johnson started a school where prospective purchasers could learn how to ride the machine and in 1819 fashionable London society was briefly gripped by a craze for riding a hobby horse. <br /> The Leadenhall Press, [1894]. unknown
18305311France: S.P. C1830. Three lovely papier maché snuff boxes. French circa 1830. Each has an engraving under varnish to the lid. One is coloured two are uncoloured. The boxes have painted edges around the image. The images are a touch darkened and the edges are a little scuffed but the boxes are still very presentable. The three are as follows: 1 "Devinequi" "Guess who." Two young men in an arcadian scene. One is behind and covering his friends eyes. Coloured image Appears to be a watercolour under varnish. 8.5cm diameter 1.5cm depth. Sound but with slight damage to the base. 2 "La Veillée" "The Vigil" A group of five in a cottage waiting expectantly although who knows what for. Woodcut under varnish. 9cm diameter. 2cm depth. Sound but with slight damage to the base. 3 "La tendresse Maternelle" "a mother's tenderness." Appears to be a mother trying to save a child from drowning. Woodcut under varnish. 8.5cm x 2cm. Gold painted edges and wood veneer base. Good condition. . Trois jolies tabatières en papier maché. Françaises vers 1830. Chacune présente une gravure sous vernis sur le couvercle. L'une est colorée les deux autres ne le sont pas. Les boîtes ont des bords peints autour de l'image. Les images sont un peu assombries et les bords sont un peu éraflés mais les boîtes sont encore très présentables. Les trois images sont les suivantes : 1 "Devinequi " "Devinez qui". Deux jeunes hommes dans une scène arcadienne. L'un d'eux est derrière et couvre les yeux de son ami. Image colorée Semble être une aquarelle sous vernis. 85 cm de diamètre 15 cm de profondeur. Sain mais avec un léger dommage à la base. 2 "La Veillée" Un groupe de cinq personnes dans une chaumière attendant avec impatience mais on ne sait pas pourquoi. Gravure sur bois sous vernis. 9 cm de diamètre. Profondeur de 2 cm. Sain mais avec un léger dommage à la base. 3 "La tendresse Maternelle" "La tendresse d'une mère". In the original full calf bindings. Externally wear to the extremities and some marks to the boards. Some loss to the spines prominent to volume I. Joints cracked but holding firm. The photographs and cards are mounted onto thick card all the photographs are fronted by a glassine title leaf the text is on art paper all bound within a full calf gilt case all edges gilt the binding with silk end-papers signed by EYRE & SPOTTISWOODE. The leaves are now coming loose from the binding the spine is wearing at the ends despite which both joints are intact the front board carries the gilt Royal coat of arms the rear board has the gilt Admiralty device. This clearly a special production for a high functionary probably naval - an ink inscription on the verso of the front free end-paper reads 'B.J. Dec.1940'; an erased pencil signature can just be read - W. R. YEADELL . However the style of binding and printing is considerably earlier than 1940; all of the named ships were completed in 1906-1907 and the appearance is of a work pre-WWI. unknown

A seventeenth century pamphlet concerning Daniel Defoe's 'A New Test of the Church of England's Loyalty' and 'A Reply to the New Test of The Church of England's Loyalty'. This work also includes Sir Francis Walsingham's letter to Monsieur Critoy concerning Queen Elizabeth's proceedings against papists and Puritans. It has since been proven that this letter is a forgery and has since been attributed to Francis Bacon writing in collusion with Archbishop Whitgift. The letter was first found in 'Scrinia Sacra' before being published to this work. With the signatures A2 B-C4 as called for. ESTC No. R6019 The first and only edition of this work. Written anonymously. This pamphlet is a response to Daniel Defoe's 'A New Test of the Church of England's Loyalty' and the anonymously produced 'A Reply to the New Test of the Church of England's Loyalty'. It discusses the penal laws made during Elizabeth I's reign which are the Act of Supremacy the Act of Uniformity and the Supremacy of the Crown Act. This work was published the same year that James II passed his penal laws or the 'Declaration of Indulgence' or 'Declaration for Liberty of Conscience' were a pair of proclamations. It was the first step to establish freedom of religion in the British Isles with the King's intention being to promote Catholicism. The declaration was to grant toleration to many Christian denominations. This pamphlet was circulated at a difficult time for the country in terms of its monarch Parliament and Religion. There was an uprising in anti-Catholic sentiment and against James' rule. Political pamphlets like this added fuel to the fire. The year after this pamphlet was issued the Glorious Revolution took hold and James was dethroned. Collated complete. Disbound as is common. Externally smart with just some minor chips and creases to the extremities. Prior owner's contemporary inscription to the title page. Internally generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are age toned with the odd handling mark and spot. Prior owner's pencil inscriptions to the top corner of pages indicating page numbers from when this work was once bound. Scarce with no editions of this work on Copac. With the signature and stamp of Arthur Swinbourn of Twickenham to the recto of front endpaper. The editor of this collection is not stated to the title page. The majority of songs to this anthology is in a Scots dialect titles include 'Tipitywitchet' 'The Rose of Last Summer' 'Smalilou' and 'Oh Sing Zelinda Sing to Me'. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally generally smart with small patches of rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. A few handling marks to boards. Small amount of rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's stamp and ink inscription to the recto of front endpaper Mr A Swinsbourn of Twickenham. Internally firmly bound. Compartments ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Red and green labels gilt. Marbled paper on boards. ---- An important early feminist utopian novel. The most famous work of Sarah Scott 1720-1795 'Millenium Hall' describes a female utopia free from male violence where property is held in common and a community of women conduct lives devoted to artistic pursuits and education Christian virtues and philanthropy. Through its focus on female equality education and friendship and with the Hall forming a model of mid-century reform ideas it provided a fictional embodiment of the ideals of the Blue Stockings Society of which Scott was a member and of which her sister Elizabeth Montagu was leader. A successful work in its time it went through four editions by 1778 and in recent years has undergone a resurgence of scholarly and public interest with a renewed focus on its early feminist meaning. Blue boards white paper spine. 10.5 cms x 18.5 cms. xv1 'Directions to the Binder'3859 Index 12 engraved plates collated as correct and situated as directed to binder uncut edges and unopened at least in part; internally clean tight and unmarked no provenance markings at all with no obvious gutter openings; edges being uncut sometimes have thin marginal brown strips to extended leaves would thus rate it internally Fine for age; covers are generally clean and apparently as originally issued spine label has short title 'third edition' and price of 8s. .i.e.8 shillings outer corners inevitably somewhat rubbed or bumped lower spine paper is missing along front joint for length of c. 4 cms and width of 1 cm. leaving bottom ends of some gatherings exposed a further much smaller chip to bottom back joint top spine good so at least Good rating for age for covers. Hooper's name does not actually appear anywhere in this edition. Aside from bottom spine this is a remarkably good copy of this ipopular work exactly as issued. This 3rd edition is moreover apparently extremely scarce I have been unable to locate any other copy mentioned on the web at time of listing being indeed significantly enlarged from the 334 pp. of the 1814 UK 2nd edition with no index pagination mentioned. Tinted lithographs of Swiss views 20 most around Lake Geneva & Mont Blanc but also Berne Thun Chute du Rhein etc. some with Lithographer named Th. Muller. Oblong quarto 288 x 215mm brown blind-stamped cloth with gilt title & Swiss emblem tips worn/gilt dulled 20 plates mounted at spine only a few blank guards present. Image size 180x118mm with publisher Briquet et Fils and printer's name Lemercier and in one or two cases Th. Muller lithographer credited below is title of view and all surrounded by ruled line about 1cm. from the image. Some edges dusty and a bit tatty but only edges affected. Fine coloured lithographic plates each with beautifully printed sharp detail. This collection appears to be complete - if all images had guard-sheets width of spine could fit more. Lithography well printed by Lemercier an established Parisian printer Briquet who sold these view-books was based in Geneva but later had ties with publishers in other Swiss cities British Museum has almost identical copy with 6 more views ref. 1958-0712-3024-1-26.
