With the fourth line of the imprint reading 'Exchange in Cornhil London. 1683'. Lacking M2 and N3-4. The 'Book of Homilies' are thirty-three sermons developing the reformed doctrines of the Church of England. Homilies were first published during Edward VI's reign before being reprinted during Elizabeth I's reign. A scarce late seventeenth century edition of these Anglican sermons and homilies. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart. Some rubbing to the joints and extremities. Minor bumping to the extremities. Minor loss to the head and tail of spine. Internally firmly bound. The title page has been trimmed and remounted to a new leaf. A1 is extended and repaired in margins loss to lower margin of A2. Chips to the extremities of quires B-D and 3C-3D with minor loss to the notes. E1 is strengthened in lower margin and with a small loss to the text from minor holes. The same repair to the bottom margin of 2H1. R2 has a small loss to three words to the bottom paragraph from a hole. Final few leaves are chipped to the edges affecting the page numbers. This work details the revoking of the sentence of the Galeres or galleys. This edict was presented to the court of aids on the 19 November 1685. In the original French. Being two leaves and therefore four pages. A very scarce work with no copies cited on the Library Hub. This edict deals with the punishment of individuals on the galleys or galeres. There is mention of the ineffectiveness of whips due to the fact that this simply injures criminals. The tract states that medical professionals are then kind to the offenders which brings a rise in recidivism. An interesting insight into the French penal system in the late seventeenth century. Disbound as called for. Externally very smart. Light spots to the front and rear pages. Inscription to the title page dated 1685. Firmly bound. Pages are bright with light scattered spots. This title was only printed the once making this a particularly hard title to come by. Bound in early eighteenth century calf. This volume contains an account of 103 cases. The license to print page is on the verso of the first leaf. In a full calf binding. There is some wear to the extremities including some rubbing and some bumping to the corners. The front board has become detached. The rear board is firm.Internally the binding of the text block is tight and firm. The pages are generally bright and clean with some slight age-toning and the occasional mark. There is a copperplate signature to the top of the title page and the front blank endpaper. Overall this volume is in very good condition. Needs some work to the binding which is later anyway. Very Good George Dawes hardcover

167566A VERY INTRIGUING LITTLE BOOK OF THE UTMOST RARITY<br /><br />FIRST and ONLY edition. 12mo 96 pp. title within a charming woodcut border. Several headpieces. Contemporary calf with gilt decorations to spine skilfully restored. An excellent copy.<br /><br /><i>This anonymous collection of heroical amorous and frivolous poems is a mystery. It has no imprint information so no place no name nor date stated. The title-page tells us just "printed in that year" which seems a joke. The only bibliographical work mentioning it is Lachèvre's Bibliographie des recueils collectifs de poésies publiés de 1597 a 1700 Paris 1905 in the Supplement Vol. 4 p. 22 Letter N. Not even Lachèvre managed to see this work in person as he stated in his comment to the work: "Nous n'avons pas été assez heureux pour mettre la main sur ce petit volume.". Lachèvre suggested that the book might have been published "vers 1675".</i><br /><br /><i>The book is mentioned also in the third part of Bibliotheca Hohendorfiana no. 1961 p. 149 the catalogue of the private library of Baron Georg Wilhelm von Hohendorf La Haye 1720.</i><br /><br />Only two copies seem to be available in public libraries around the world: at the BNF of Paris "Ex. libr. de Thomas Westwod. Rel. mar. r. de C.
