FIRST EDITION. “Mary Kettilby’s collection of cookery recipes and medicinal and home remedies from a tasty “green-pease soop without meat†to gooseberry wine. Households that could not afford French cooks or French cooking came to form a growing audience for books by women that contained unpretentious recipes cut to suit a less costly cloth for pickling and collaring rather than ragouts. Where Hannah Woolley had led plenty of female cooks with their eye on the profitable middle market followed with books like Mary Kettilby’s collection of recipes 1714 and Eliza Smith’s Compleat Housewife 1734†Colquhoun Taste: The Story of Britain through its Cookery 2015. Kettilby’s book purported to be a collective effort: the preface stating that ‘a Number of very Curious and Delicate House-wives Club’d to furnish out this Collection’. Maclean however pages 79-82 doubts this and notes that evidence from later editions indicate Kettilby to be the main author. Apart from the Preface there is no introduction of any sort: the recipes follow immediately after the chapter headings. The book is clearly divided into chapters of recipes for food and for remedies but within the chapters there is no definite structure. For example the first chapter begins with six recipes for soups followed by recipes for collared beef ‘French-Cutlets’ collared mutton stewed pigeons broiled pigeons dressed turbot and then patties ‘for a Dish of Fish’. The recipes are given either as goals as ‘To make Hogs-Puddings’ or as titles sometimes with descriptions as ‘A very good Tansy’. Quantities are given in whichever units are convenient as ‘a Gallon of grated Bread’ ‘three Pounds of Currants’ or ‘nine Eggs’. Often quantities rely on the cook’s judgment as ‘as much Sugar as will make it very sweet’. Temperatures and timings are given when necessary as ‘a cool Oven: Half an Hour bakes it’. Later binding in 19th century style. Half-calf gilt-decorated spine marbled endpapers. The front paste-down contains the bookplates of two significant culinary collections: Thomas Scruggs & Margaret Cook and Marian Hatch. The Hatch bookplate was designed and engraved by British engraver Alfred J. Downey. With the bookseller's ticket of Philip C. Duschnes to the rear pastedown. Ink ownership mark to half-title "1718 Eliseab; and inscription on final page of text "illeg. near New College Oxford". The miscellanies to this volume are branded as being 'divine and moral'. Former owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper Matthew Parker.ESTC reference no: T184981. Collated lacking the frontispiece. Noted to the title page as being by 'Author of The week"s preparation to the sacrament'. Each miscellany to this work is no more than two sentences and include words of wisdom such as 'If a man be not so happy as he desires let this be his comfort that he is not so wretched as he deserves' and 'What I cannot avoid I will learn to bear with Patience.' In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally sound. Small loss to the head and tail of spine. Joints are split with the hinges strained but firm. Former owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper Matthew Parker. Frontispiece has been excised. Internally firmly bound. Worming to the gutter not affecting text. Copperplates 62 Titlepage vignette with coat of arms of Gloucester and its cathedral in background in total 370 coats of arms engraved by Ames of Bristol. Small folio linen spine with contemporary blue paper wraps. Engraved titlepage 62 plates of coats of arms. Titlepage partly torn across and repaired on back and hinge strengthened else a neat copy with only a little light freckling. There is no text or subscribers list in this version the book was sold both with and without 49 pages of text which listed and briefly described the coats of arms pictured in the plates. The arms of Gloucestershire families are derived from Sir Robert Atkins' History 1712 and a few from Rudder's New History 1779. Printed 6 per page they are alphabetical first from Atkyns up to plate 53 which has only 4 arms ending in "Yate". Then the alphabet begins again with A from Rudder but ends with "Cassey". A further volume was intended but the work was never completed. Generally attributed to Sir George Nayler born at Stroud Garter King of Arms but the Dict. Nat. Lovely blue marbled endpapers. Interior is clean and tight. This is a fascinating volume of its day and generally in lovely condition. hardcover

A pseudonym for a still unkown writer "Junius" caused controversy in late Eighteenth Century London with a series of inflammatory letters to various influential figures and magazines. The letters here are an exchange between him and the British Army officer William Draper. Rebound in cloth binding with decorative paper-covered boards. Externally very smart indeed there ios only some very minor rubbing to extremities. Internally the binding of the endpages is somewhat tender but elsewhere the pages are firmly bound but are foxed throughout. Includes bookplate to pastedown. Very Good A. Thomson hardcover

The most famous work of Sarah Scott 1720-1795 'Millenium Hall' describes a female utopia free from male violence where property is held in common and a community of women conduct lives devoted to artistic pursuits and education Christian virtues and philanthropy. Through its focus on female equality education and friendship and with the Hall forming a model of mid-century reform ideas it provided a fictional embodiment of the ideals of the Blue Stockings Society of which Scott was a member and of which her sister Elizabeth Montagu was leader. A successful work in its time it went through four editions by 1778 and in recent years has undergone a resurgence of scholarly and public interest with a renewed focus on its early feminist meaning.
