An adult in a white robe watches the children in the foreground with a young child in similar robe facing them. Palm trees and dust road in the background. The children seem too young to be in school. An attractive albumen image. Slightly faded but overall in good condition. H265mm x 210mm. On green backing card 430 x 350 mm. This charming volume novelthe tale of Alfred Leslie and his escapades in the city of Glasgow. Author remains anonymous but was named Frederick Arnold as denoted by a pencil inscription to the verso of the front endpaper.In a half calf binding with a beautiful decorative gilt spine and marbled boards. Features a full illustrated frontispiece and an engraved title page along with a number of full plate illustrations by J. O. Brown. Contemporary ownership inscription to the front blank. Externally lovely very minor shelfwear. Inscription to front endpaper denotes the author 'by Frederick Arnold' and an ownership inscription. Internally firmly bound pages bright and clean. This work looks at the acts of parliament regarding hallmarking so as to protect the public against fraud and to protect the trader against unfair competition. There are explanations to this work of how these acts relate to Birmingham or within twenty miles thereof. This pamphlet is aimed at the silversmiths and plate workers for their better understanding of the rules and regulations. A scarce work with only one on jisc held at the University of Birmingham. In marbled wraps. Externally generally smart with light rubbing and fading to the extremities. Light creasing to the corners. Internally firmly bound. Minor offsetting to the endpapers. Remarkably crisp and clean for such a cheaply printed and ephemeral document. Broadside which describes a meeting of a "great number" Fynes od an early trade union of miners led by Thomas Hepburn in dispute with their employer over wages fines and rights to housing. Hepburn was a veteran labour organiser whose campaigning had won shorter working days for boys in the North East. The meeting described here was a precursor to a series of meetings between the trade union and the Marquess of Londonderry which was a significant step in the history of trade unionism.
