Folkestone is a port town on the English channel which was an important harbour during the 19th and 20th century. The scenes in this collection cover some of the towns famous aspects including the Leas Lift a funicular railway which carries passengers from the seafront to the promenade. This book includes a scene of the Pier in the general view of the harbour dating this book to after its completion in 1905. In paper covered boards. Externally sound with browning hand handling marks. Some rubbing and bumping. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with scattered spots and some rust marks from stapled binding. Internally modern endpapers original blue printers soft paper wrappers with red publishers label at centre 4 wonderful plates each with a title at the base and the publication details below London Published February 1st. 1813 by James Dunford. Great Newport Street. The plates are: Near Beddgelert at the base of Snowdon. Near Montgomery North Wales. Between Llanydloes & Machynleth. Mallwyd Merionethshire. All in near fine condition no visible watermarks. 466280 mm. Accompanied by 2 letters from the National Library of Wales 1984 & 1985 discussing the rarity of this bound set of 4 and noting that the NLW has the 4 loose which they purchased in 1918. 18078763Scotland: Published for The Author 1807. First edition Privately Printed in a run of 120 copies only. Folio. 27pp text with 43 etchings as called for with tissue guards. Bound in contemporary full tree calf decorated and ruled in gilt with a large gilt central ellipse by Scott of Edinburgh. Later restoration to the binding has involved strengthening of corners extremities and a full respine with the original spine laid on. The work was done a while ago and was very professionally executed leaving the binding strong solid and still remarkably handsome. Internally clean with some gloriously wide margins a set of ink initials C.L.S. to the front pastedown and a large note pasted to the front flyleaf detailing the origins and provenance of the book:</p><p>"This volume belonged to Frances Lady Douglas sister of the 2nd Duke of Buccleuch and Wife of Archibald 1st Lord Douglas Son of 1st Marquess of Douglas created Peer 1790 of Douglas House Petersham. The C.L.S. opposite is Caroline Lucy Scott Daughter of the above Lord and Lady Douglas and wife of Admiral Sir George Scott of Gala. Lady Douglas was born in 1752. The Douglas Library where this copy entered trade was sold in 1931 at Petersham. M.H.G."</p><p>Elizabeth Countess of Sutherland as is evidenced by this work was an accomplished and skilled artist that much is undeniable. This accomplishment has been rather overshadowed by her role in the incredibly damaging and inhumane uprooting and impoverishment of thousands of her native Scottish tenants through the process of mass family eviction that is now known as The Highland Clearances. The historic occupants of the Sutherland estates traditionally smallholder tenants crofters and the like were evicted en masse men women and children to make way for "agricultural improvements" in the shape of highly profitable sheep farms and other projects not native to the area but guaranteed to swell the coffers of the Countess' estates. In part this highly skilled and evocative collection of engravings perfectly capturing the lonely and awe inspiring remoteness of the Orkneys was only enabled by a lifestyle of leisure and freedom that was directly funded by the misery of the very people whose land she so ably documented artistically. One of the most challenging exercises in separating the art from the artist we have thus far encountered.</p><p>The identity of M.H.G. is unknown but they clearly knew their stuff; a beautifully executed collection of etchings from an aristocratic origin and with an equally aristocratic provenance. Scarce and complicated. Published for The Author unknown

RPPC-1455<p>It seems this building went up in 1900. I assume The Royal was a theater of some sort as there is a cheery guy waving from a box office. Casley's Studio stocked Kodaks and picture frames. I found a few mentions of Casley's work online. The ID and date are on the back. The photo is in very good condition with some fade.</p>

Striking 19th-century black papier-mache or 'carton-pierre' black 'Monastic' boards originally used on Eyre & Spottiswood's 1847 12mo edition of the bible and their 1848 Book of Common Prayer. These editions were originally produced with a matching papier-mache spine. This volume however has these papier-mache boards re-applied remarkably intact to an originally blank notebook in a black calf binding. Raised bands to spine. Spine has been personalised with initials 'A P' in gilt gothic lettering near base. Moulded papier-mache boards in deep relief have Christ with right hand raised in blessing to centre with elaborate frame incorporating gothic tracery and vine acanthus and lily motifs. Delicate gilt decor to papier-mache board edges. Slight rubbing to spine and mild wear to papier-mache boards with some minor cracking to edges and slight chipping to corner. Small loss to top of gothic arch relief to front board. All edges gilt. Blind decor to turn-ins. Endpapers reinforced with white cloth tape at gutters with the same reinforcement to first interior pages at gutter legacy of an early repair. Hinges sound. 12mo 9.5 x 15cm. Minor scattered foxing. 38pp are inscribed in a neat block script likely mid-20th century presumably by 'A P' with prayers all written to rectos leaving versos blank some divided by subject 'elections' 'angels' leaving the majority of pages blank. A sympathetic re-use of these 1840s boards with the inscribed prayers ensuring they continued in use in a devotional context. Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request. Morocco-grain brown calf floral ornaments blind stamped to boards fore-edges marbled blue blue marbled endpapers. An eclectic collection of manuscript recipes produced across the nineteenth-century. Written in multiple hands likely beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending in the 1920s this is a fascinating palimpsest of domestic life across the Victorian period. Contains cookery baking cosmetic and medicinal recipes. One of the authors frequently cites the origin of each recipe giving an insight into the bookish and social resources required to assemble such a collection in one volume. Loss to spine tips and scuffs to spine boards and corners a little rubbed. Occasional foxing to contents and some pages attached to one another in erratic ways for example with a nail or glue. Some recipes in the final gathering are upside-down- it was common to flip hand written recipe books and begin a new 'upside down' section from the rear often with tonics and medicinal cures as is the case in this book.
